Captain Mark Rowell of Legit Fish Charters told me that stripers are coming through the South Shore in three different waves. There are the beach runners, which are feeding on sand eels. Then there are the ledge-loving linesiders, which are chock full of Jonah crabs. The latter might be a thing because the crabs have shed their shells! As to specifics, Captain Rowell pointed out Collamore Ledge. And then thereโ€™s the deepwater fish, which are shadowing schools of pogies and prone to taking down a tuna-grade mackerel. Above all, thereโ€™s fish aplenty with the bite spread around, making mobbing other boats unnecessary. As for tuna, the skipper is spotting everything from 89โ€ fish to footballs busting bait from Stellwagen through Cape Cod Bay. "On The Water"

As befitting โ€œshark weekโ€, Captain Mark Rowell of Legit Fish Charters has been pestered by โ€œjawsโ€ while targeting tuna. Porbeagles have been taking down the baits, but thanks to circle hooks are released quickly and without fanfare. There are football tuna within 2 1/2 miles of the shoreline, but typically are leery as they usually are close to the coast. Miles from shore, there are big schools of bite-sized pogies that whales are taking advantage of. Should the forage push into shore, the bass bite should get explosive. Scads of sand eels are holding slot and up striped bass in the North River with the incoming tide bringing the bait and bass upstream while the outgoing tide flushes everything towards the mouth of the river. Captain Mark Rowell of Legit Fish Charters is putting patrons onto an interesting mix of species also as both haddock and stripers have been cooperating for the crew. Stone Ledge continues to be great for gadoids, while the best bass fishing vacillates between Minot Ledge and the mouth of the North River, with the latter fishing best as cooler water is ushered in on the flood. Mackerel remain an easy find and are the bait of choice for the bass. As for tuna, the best bluefin fishing remains east of Stellwagen, but with the volume of bait inshore and steadily rising water temperatures, Block Island bluefin are expected to move up soon. Pete from Belsanโ€™s Bait and Tackle in Scituate described the mackerel population as โ€œcanโ€™t miss!โ€ The unusually large population of sand eels at the Spit is holding slots. For larger fish, trolling X-Raps east of Sunken Ledge has been effective. Blues remain a no-show. "on the water"

Legit Fish Chartersโ€˜ Captain Mark Rowell has been off to the races, or more accurately, off Race Point. Blues, bass, bluefin, and a web of bait species is one thing, but whatโ€™s been as impressive is the surface feeds which randomly pop up โ€“ something which is all too rare in this era. Slot to bigger bass, gator blues, and occasionally Charlie have been pushing sand eels and mackerel to the surface, making for excellent top water action. Of course, with all the mackerel around, some are just topping off the livewell and trolling up tight lines. "on the water"

Captain Mark Rowell of Legit Fish Charters and crew were in the midst of jigging up mackerel just inside state waters when they saw the fins. A school of stripers up to 51โ€ was also there looking for a mack snack. As is often the case when in open water, the fish were fussy, but the captain came stealthily prepared with 20-pound fluorocarbon leaders at the ready. Thatโ€™s pretty flimsy stuff for fish of that size, but the captain said that the new bow-to-stern Daiwa gear heโ€™s packing was more than up to the task. "on the Water"

Captain Mark Rowell of Legit Fish Charters told me that once the seas settled down and rivers flushed out the โ€œYoohooโ€ colored water stripers returned to the North River. Mackerel remain hit-or-miss among inshore ledges, but when found are the perfect snack for river bass. Drifting on an outgoing tide by the Fourth Cliff has been especially good. The skipperโ€™s gut tells him that haddock should be moving along the northeast rim of Stellwagen and just maybe onto the Middle Bank. On Sunday, he intends to find out. "On the Water"
