Family of 5 of us fished with on The Skillet with Captain John and Crew, Dave, including three generations of women, boy/girl twins, and ages ranging from 15 to 74. We caught 2 Mahi Mahi and one stripped blue marlin during our 6-hour trip. Both Dave and Captain John were great and made the lulls between bights go quickly with great conversation. The boat was the perfect size for our group and was clean. We stopped at a local store for snacks and drinks the day before to bring along. The Skillet provided a cooler for our items and there are other amenities including air conditioning and a flushing latrine on this clean vessel. Both gentlemen were knowledgeable, safe, patient with first-timers, and we shared a lot of laughs all while John and Dave minded our environment and safety. They also gave us recommendations for food and other entertainment on the island. Wish we had time for additional days. Maybe next time! 100% recommend!

We chartered a 6-hour trip with Skillet Sportfishing on January 4th for 6 people. When we arrived at the designated place and time, Captain John was waiting for us in the parking lot. He led us to his boat and gave us a safety briefing and quick rundown of “do’s and don’ts” for the trip. The Skillet is very clean and well maintained. There was enough room onboard for our group of 6 to be comfortable. We were out of the harbor on time. No luck catching baitfish, so we trolled using lures for the whole trip.

First mate Dave was great. He clearly explained the process of using the fighting chair and proper reeling technique. Both he and Captain John were very friendly and fun to talk to.

We did catch a very nice Mahi. Dave cleaned it for us and cut the fillets into steak sized portions. We grilled it that night and it was some of the best fish that we have ever eaten.

We highly recommend Skillet Sportfishing. If we do another charter from Kona it will definitely be with Captain John.

Captian John was fantastic through the whole afternoon.  It was our first time deep sea fishing and himself and his helper walked us through everything and made us feel comfortable with the equipment and process. Unfortunately for us it was a tough day on the water but Captian John did everything he could together us on fish, we did get hooked up on a shortbilled spearfish, but it spit the hook before landing. Even though we went home empty my wife and enjoying the day and conversation and would definitely book again.

We only caught one fish because the ocean current kept changing. However,  Dave and the captain kept the trip interesting the whole time with good conversation and beautiful weather you can’t really go wrong. They filet our fish for us and gave us a hefty amount. All in all worth the money spent. We thought about doing another trip the following day because we really enjoyed ourselves. Do yourself the favor and just book it already. Don’t hesitate its worth the investment.

We had a fantastic day fishing with Captain John and Logan. We caught two blue Marlin and enjoyed the backdrop of the big island. The crew was friendly and knowledgeable, giving us a quick overview of the tackle and technique. I highly recommend this charter if you want to go after the big ones!
