Islamorada, United States
- Background
- Rick started as a mate in Marlin tourneys in 1978, before his 16th birthday, and grew up fishing the flats and offshore waters of Key Biscayne and Miami. He finally landed in Islamorada in 1995 after charter fishing Costa Rica (as featured in Salt Water Sportsman, March 1991), St. Thomas, Mexico, Bahamas, and South Florida. Rick found the truth in Islamorada's reputation as "The Sport Fishing Capital of the World." Many IGFA world records have been caught here. There is an incredible variety of fish and fishing: Tarpon, offshore, wrecks, reef, flats, and Everglades!
- Techniques
- Fishing his custom 23' Sea Craft is a dream. "Hook your own fish!" Rick shows you how. He is there for any assistance too. When the fishing gets "fast," Rick will help hook more fish to fill the box. A favorite is "Live Bait TARPON FISHING!" Huge tarpon explode on your "live bait" less than fifty feet away, a "jaw dropping, fish of a life time!" It's thrilling, live bait fishing for sailfish, tunas, mackerel, etc; or trolling for Mahi, marlin, wahoo, etc. The wrecks test your metal on heavier tackle for big snapper, grouper, and jacks. Reef fishing for snappers, groupers, etc is fun rod bending for all. Big sharks on the flats thrill the kids. Swordfish offshore is our big game fishery here, and Rick has caught them up to 350 lb. Rick has extensive experience: catching around +1000 billfish for clients: including 113 blue marlin, 4 black marlin, 9 swordfish, 2 stripe marlin (1 grand slam), a few white marlin, and releasing around 3,100 tarpon, averaging +3 tarpon/ day.
