It was a glorious morning, with towering cumulus illuminated by the rising sun the day before the storm. Captain Doug was there to meet us at the dock and we left promptly.
Over the course of the next 3 hours, he took us to 4 fishing spots in the Intracoastal, all of which produced fish—- although we were not always so good at hooking and landing them!
Nonetheless, I did land a speckled sea trout, one of my favorite fish; my brother landed a magnificent redfish; and my 10-year old great-grandson Kyler brought in a couple of nice jacks (although, counting each fish he lost as half a fish, Kyler claimed a catch of 12!).
Captain Doug was patient with us all, and taught this old duffer a lot about fishing these waters so new to him.
He cleaned and fileted our catch with skill, and that evening we had one of the best fish dinners I’ve ever eaten.
But most of all, Capt Doug was the best guide you could want for Kyler. He treated him like a man; cast for him and helped him fish without ever making him feel as if was being treated “like a kid”.
All day long, Kyler kept saying, “That was SO much fun!”
Our group of 3 was just right for the boat.
