Communication with the captain before the trip was excellent, we exchanged a few messages, and he sent clear directions on how to find the boat and what time to arrive. On the morning of the trip, he let us know that he had an emergency and that Captain Steve would be taking over. That wasn’t an issue at all, these things happen, and we still felt good about heading out for some offshore fishing. It was October, and our plan was to target Goliath Grouper and have some fun catching bigger fish.

We arrived on time and found the boat. Our first impression, though, was disappointment. The boat didn’t look like what we expected for an offshore trip, in the listing photos it looked like a sportfishing boat, we see in the boat section that is center console, so we assumed it would be a bit more suitable for the open sea. Luckily, there were just three of us, all adult men. If I had brought my wife and kids, I think it would have been quite an uncomfortable experience.

Once we got going, the boat actually handled the water better than we feared. We reached the first spot, dropped anchor, and split into two groups, one of us went after bigger fish, and the others focused on catching live bait. We caught a good number of yellowtail snapper, mostly small ones, so they were better suited as bait for the bigger fish. Captain Steve was fantastic, energetic, skilled, and clearly knew the spots. At the first location, we had two strong bites. My friend missed the first one, but we hooked the second. After just a few seconds, though, the line snapped. It happens, there were wrecks around, so maybe the fish managed to tangle up.

We moved to another location and had several more bites, but every time, the line broke before we even started reeling in properly. Steve mentioned that someone might have tightened the drag too much earlier.

We completely understand that fishing isn’t catching, and that October isn’t peak season for many species. We also know fish can break the line, that’s part of the game.

In the end, it felt like the setup might not have been fully optimized for the size and strength of the fish we were targeting. We understood that some of this could also come down to the conditions or the way the fish were biting that day, but it would have been great to really test our strength against one and bring it closer to the surface.

While we didn’t catch any fish while trolling, we had a ball fishing the bottom and were able to reel in some nice red grouper and some yellow tail snappers. Overall we had a fantastic day aboard the Double Wrap! The Captain and Crew were great, helpful and knowledgeable!!

Captain and crew had many rods prepared for multiple styles of fishing so we were able to change target fish without delay as the biting changed. They were great with our kids and we will be eating fish for days.
