Fresh Stanchfield Fishing Reports

The Minnesota walleye opener couldn't have gone any better! The weather was beautiful and the fish were biting!! We caught right around 30 walleyes. Snap jigging a rattle bait was our technique, and my favorite way to catch 'em!

The spring crappie bite is heating up quickly! Fish are really aggressive in shallow water and they're eating plastics under a float!

The weather has not been ideal lately, but we're still managing to catch some crappies. The water on this particular section of the lake started out at 50.7 degrees in the morning and by early afternoon it was up to 52 degrees. The crappies were sitting in about 7 feet of water around healthy weed patches. A jig and plastic combo under a bobber was the prefered tactic.

Crappies are on the move, looking for the warmest water available. I recently found crappies in about 5 feet of water on the North end of the lake. On this particular lake, I found 46 degree water on the South end of the lake and 50 degree water on the North end. Crappies were in small roving schools that took some work to entice, but we did end up catching them! The bite is right on the verge of firing up and soon they will be on a feeding frenzy!

The lakes are mostly thawed in my area and the crappie bite is going to get started very soon. Once the weather changes to a string of sunny warm days, the crappies will start moving into the shallows. I'm anticipating a phenomenal bite this spring.
