Fresh Bahia Mar Yachting Center Fishing Reports

August was a pleasant month here in Ft. Lauderdale. Lots of calm days and some nice clear clean water close to shore. Some slow days as always but most days held some pretty good action. The end of the month has brought a big push of Bonito. Aggressive hungry Bonito. Some Kingfish in there with them, and large sharks are in there with them as well. Only an occasional Sail. When we see a Wahoo he is more likely than not a good one and has taken a bait fished on a deep line, those same deep lines that in summer get the most attention from the Kingfish and Bonito. Nice Amberjacks remain on some of the deep wrecks, only an occasional Grouper. We have snapper fished when the current allows (on some days it has been very swift) out in deeper water. Sharks out there too, but we get some. Occasional Mahi inside now as they essentially require a full day charter as they prefer deeper water this time of year, and even then can be hit or miss. As we pass the midway point of August we find warm weather and on many days very calm sea conditions. We continue to direct a lot of our mid August efforts on our fishing charters in Ft. Lauderdale to the areas just offshore of the main reef line which has us fishing in depths of 90 to 500 feet at just over two miles off the beach. Bonitos along this reef area have drawn some very nice Wahoo into those depths. We have had a couple between 45 and 55 pounds. Wish this were an everyday fish but far from it, but they are around and certainly get some attention in tactics and attention at the dock as well. Kingfish in the shallower areas with the Bonito, which is actually properly called a False Albacore. Current has recently been strong making bottom fishing difficult but we managed a few Jacks and Grouper. Sharks around, they like a good current. Slim pickins on the Sailfish, very scattered. Lots of Barracudas of all sizes in all depths, some quite large. We are coming off our summer season and although fishing every day we have some gaps in the schedule. A couple of more blinks of the eye and summer break for schoolers of all ages will end for another summer. Not sure “schoolers” is actually a proper word, but it tells the story, summer ending for children and young adults. The summer months will be with us a while longer, but those young face will be back in the classrooms. We'll see our local family customers on the Saturdays and Sundays on our fishing charters in Ft. Making our way deep into July now here in Ft. Lauderdale. Fishing charters are now firmly entrenched in the typical summertime patterns, that not being only fishing but the weather patterns as well. Pleased to say we have been enjoying reasonable fishing and also reasonable weather on most days. Summer brings more pleasant sea conditions on a typical day than winter days. We do see some rain, we are tropical here, but usually scattered and does not interrupt our days on the water. There is a large disparity of the rain experienced on the inland areas of the state and our offshore conditions. Inshore areas out west get it regularly, but we do get some too. The A/C and leather inside our cabin not only serves to shake the sun for a minute but also to duck in and shake the occasional shower too. Action along the reef lines continues to produce Kingfish, Bonito and Tunas. Some Sailfish along those areas as well and we have had Wahoo too. Amazing numbers of Barracuda as of late, likely due to the recent regs of strict management of them. The vast majority of those (as well as Sailfish and Sharks) are catch photo and release. Some of these fish have measured out quite large. Some Mahi-Mahi,. Snappers and Amberjack and Almoco Jacks on the wrecks and structure. Please enjoy the pictures of some of our anglers. This will be a quick fishing report for Ft. Lauderdale as I post this 4th of July. Burgers are about ready to grill and never wise to keep the other half waiting as we all know. So Happy 4th to all and here we go. We have been blessed with good weather here with the last couple of days with a pleasant onshore wind. Summertime fish like an onshore wind. Nice school sized Kings frequenting the reef lines and Bonitos and good sized Barracudas in there with them. Blackfin Tunas also there but mostly just slightly deeper as one would expect for summer months. For shark fishers they have been in the area regularly out in the deep water and also up on and between the reefs. Scattered Mahi, Wahoo and occasional Sail. Overall pretty good chances for success most every day. So into July we go, warm but not ridiculously so, and doing what we love. Fishing. Halfway through June already, amazing. As we have mentioned before time really does seem to fly. Kids out of school, families in town and we have been fishing steadily as we move through the month. Kingfish, and Bonitos remain in decent numbers right up on the reefs early and then often just slightly deeper in the afternoon. At a mile from shore here in waters from 90 to 120 feet in depth has been good and often decent action right out front of our inlet. Blackfin Tunas just offshore of that and we have had some Wahoo in the same areas. Some Jacks remain on the deep wrecks and some nice Almoco Jacks in there with the typically larger Amberjacks. Only an occasional Sailfish. Sharks up on the reefs and also off the edge, it's summer. And summer it is as we see more showers now, but fewer along the beaches as most are inshore pelting the alligators in the everglades areas. Typical actual temperature has been around 88, but some “feel hotter” days are common this time of year.
