May Lake Toho Fishing report
May Lake Toho Fishing report
May 9, 2023
This has been our BEST year we’ve ever had catching trophy sized bass on Lake Toho so far and it hasn’t let up. The lake continues to produce 7+ pound bass continuously and the water quality seems to be at the best its ever been with more natural grass like shrimp grass and pepper grass growing than ever before. We’ve been consistently putting 20+ fish in the boat on our charters with some days catching over 40! While shiners have been the best bite, this is also the best time of year for artificials, when 25-30 pound bags are caught regularly. These post spawn fish are hungry and looking to eat anything they can. With these fish being in the post spawn stage and the lake being down two feet (as usual at this time of year) the bulk of the bass and bait have moved offshore to grass flats of hydrilla, shrimp grass, and pepper grass. There has also been plenty of schooling action throughout the lake and if you find one of these areas the topwater bite has been excellent. The best bite however if you’re not on one of these topwater spots early in the morning has been on flukes twitched around on the bottom, speedworms reeled through the tops of the grass, and on senkos pitched and casted around both just open water submerged grass and around the edges of visible pepper and maidencane grass. The lake as a whole has been fishing very well from north to south and it seems like we’ve been catching trophy bass throughout all of it! And with the summer historically being the time of year that all of the record size bass that have ever been caught out of Florida were caught, I’m very excited to see what the lake produces this year. Capt. AJ

Lake Toho spring forecast
Lake Toho spring forecast
April 2, 2023
Spring bass fishing on Lake Toho here in Central Florida is one of the most productive times for catching good numbers of bass as well as the trophy bass of a lifetime. The reliability of bass fishing on Lake Toho at this time of year is due mainly to the weather becoming very stable and in turn the bass fishing is also very stable and productive at this time of year. AJ’s Bass Guides has been in operation since 1970 and holds the lake record of 16 pounds 10 ounces which was caught by Ed Chancy the founder of AJ’s Bass Guides in the month of May in 1977 on a black grape paddle tail plastic worm. Captain Jamie Jackson caught the second largest bass out of Lake Toho weighing 15 pounds 8 ounces also in the month of May in 1987 on a rattletrap during the 1987 drawdown. Florida bass fishing in the spring is the best time of year for catching big bass on large golden wild shiners as well as artificial lures. If it is artificial lures that you are interested in, springtime is what we consider the best time of year for fishing artificials on Lake Toho. It is not uncommon to catch a 5 bass limit weighing over 30 pounds on artificials at this time of year. 2023 has been one of the best years that we have seen for catching trophy-sized Lake Toho Florida bass in a very long time. As we move into the spring months this type of fishing will continue and the outlook for this spring may be the best that we have seen yet for catching a Lake Toho trophy. Also 2023 has been one of the busiest years that we have ever experienced in the 53 years that we have been in operation and even though we have 12 full-time captains working for us we recommend reserving your date as early as possible while we still have one of our professional full-time Lake Toho bass guides available. Looking forward to seeing y’all soon and bass wishes, Captain Jamie Jackson

What anglers said about fishing in Lake Tohopekaliga

Don't come with the expectation of catching a monster. You may get lucky but quantity is just as good as quality IMO. May want to consider March for a bass trip in Kissimmee area as this is apparently the spawn season and a shiner drifting over their bed is irresistible. Even a bad day of fishing beats a day at work. ?

If you have kids the 2 hour trip was perfect. Go early morning as was suggested by the Captain...less hot and we were able to catch a fish less then 5 minutes from anchoring.

Take a lot of shiners, it is a live bait lake. Have fun. Some times Mother Nature changes your plans, but a bad day on a lake is still better than any day at work. (Note) This is the first trip my captain took that he only boated 3 fish.

Find a local guide that knows these bodies of waters. No matter your experience level there’s a learning curve to be had. Capt. David is the man!

Contact a guide that knows the Lakes and how to fish for them. This is especially true if you have children that have not had much fishing experience. Really, Captain Jai made it a wonderful trip for my wife and I as well. There is nothing like going to a new area and catching large bass steady for 4 hours.
