Fresh Fishing Reports from Lemon Bay

The silver king awaits.
The silver king awaits.

Tough to put into words the satisfaction when you grab one of these prehistoric fish by the face. Allow me to explain... If you know me you know that I have a love/ hate relationship with the silver king. In particular I despise fishing the pass. Well, on Friday we fished for 6 hours in Boca Grande pass and had only 4 bites. We landed 0 fish. Yep, that's right I got skunked. Tarpon fishing can be like that sometimes but when every boat around you is hooking up and flying fish in all directions it can take a toll on your morale. Before we fishing the pass my regular client specifically said he wanted to fish the pass. I tried my best to persuade them otherwise and even reassured them I knew where they were off the beach and we wouldn't have to deal with any other boats or sharks. Well when a customer has fished with you so many times that they pay your mortgage as a captain you do whatever they want. With my ego broken down a little I got up at 4:30 on Saturday morning and decided to go to the beach by myself and get some vitamin sea. First bait in the water at 7:30 got smoked but the fish broke instantly. With tarpon fishing you literally have to make every bite count. I was crushed. About an hour or so passed and I got another perfect opportunity and was able to get tight and eventually get this beauty boatside. As luck would have it a boat was passing by and was kind enough to snap some photos and text them to me today. All the hard work, early mornings, hours and hours spent getting the right bait finally paid off and I was able to tango with the silver king. That's all I wanted. Just 1 fish for me per year is all I need. All the rest are for my customers. Trust me when I tell you that catching a tarpon solo is one of the hardest things to do but lord was it worth it. I tell people that tarpon fishing is the most frustrating yet rewarding fishing there is- there's literally nothing like it. May is filling up quick so get your tarpon trips locked in ASAP.

To book with an experienced captain like Tim Hermus in order to give yourself the best chance of catching fish, but even with the best captains catching fish can't be guaranteed but it's always great fun to try.

If you’re a first time fisherman, the intercoastal offers a nice place to get comfortable with your gear. If you’re experienced, the gulf is just right there and easy to access. March was a good time of year to go (March 23rd for us) as it was slightly cool to start, but warm and enjoyable enough and never TOO hot.

We have fished a few places in SW Florida in the past year. Englewood is a gorgeous community without the hectic feel of Naples or Ft Myers. We had fish on all day long. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting a more laid back fishing day, where you catch a lot of fish, which is more of what my family enjoys.

Our half day charter on March 16 was fantastic. MM Charters was the best charter I've ever been on with a knowledgeable, friendly, patient Captain. Best part of our 10 day vacation!

Yes...stayed a little South in Estero and had never heard of Englewood Florida before this trip. Boat leaves from a great spot...the Captain's little piece of Nirvana...a cute home right on the water and just a stone's throw from fishing...

Try different types of fishing. On shore from beach you never know what you will catch. It is my favorite way to fish while relaxing in the sun with a drink! There are plenty of small fish along the shore for youngsters to catch using small hooks and frozen shrimp. it is non-stop action.

Only thing I was disappointed about was I didn't know that I should only have a fishing party of 4. I had 6 so we took turns fishing. It worked and captain Tim was very accomodating. We had a great time. I wish there was a way I could tell what the max fishing lines on boats are before booking.

Book a trip with Captain Ryan at Fin Crazy Charters. Also bring a few poles and fish from the beach. The snook fishing is very good. I mainly threw a 3/8 oz. jighead with a 4" grub. In the morning and evenings, the snook are extremely close to the shore. Within 5 feet of the beach. Took me awhile to figure out they were that close. Would catch 4 or 5 every morning and again in the evening and an occasional redfish as well.

Don't take a bunch of stuff on the boat. A couple of bottles of water per person, maybe a small snack. A small hand towel, sunglasses, camera and a hat. Sunscreen is a must. Leave the rest up to your Captain. Also, Captain Ryan Riegsecker, The Royal Palm Marina and Snook's Bayside Bar and Grill.
