Two successful billfish releases made July 17 a memorable offshore morning for Will, Chase, Gaines and Bill from Texas aboard the 35-foot Riviera Blue Water with Captain Oscar. Their six-hour charter produced both a blue marlin and a sailfish, with each fish successfully released back into the Pacific.
Warm blue water, mostly sunny skies, light northwest winds and calm seas provided favorable conditions as the crew searched for offshore activity.
Dredge Fishing for Billfish Offshore from Cabo
Captain Oscar monitored current changes, bait concentrations and surface activity while positioning Blue Water in areas offering opportunities for billfish.
A professional dredge formed an important part of the trolling presentation.
The dredge is an underwater attraction device designed to imitate a concentrated school of baitfish. It adds movement beneath the surface and can help attract curious predators toward the fishing spread.
The approach helped produce encounters with two distinctly different billfish species.

Blue Marlin Brings Power to the Cabo Fishing Day
The blue marlin delivered the heavier battle of the morning.
Blue marlin combine speed, strength and endurance, requiring coordinated work between the angler, captain and crew once the fight begins.
Captain Oscar managed Blue Water's position while the crew assisted throughout the encounter. After an intense fight, the marlin was successfully brought under control and released.
The successful release allowed the fish to return to the Pacific and gave the Texas group their first major highlight of the charter.
Sailfish Adds Speed and Another Successful Release
The sailfish brought a different style of action.
Known for speed, agility and their distinctive dorsal sail, sailfish can produce exciting surface displays during a fight. The anglers experienced that faster-paced billfish encounter before the crew successfully completed the second release of the morning.
Catching and releasing two different billfish species during one six-hour trip gave Will, Chase, Gaines and Bill a varied offshore experience without relying on a high-volume catch.
The final result was simple and significant: one blue marlin and one sailfish caught, fought and successfully released.
For Captain Oscar and the Blue Water crew, July 17 became a quality summer billfish charter built around effective dredge fishing, favorable conditions and two successful releases.
