Picking a captain and a boat is a crap shoot but you do the best you can.  I reviewed a number of boats before selecting Tres Amores.  While it was not the lowest cost charter, I selected it because the boat looked a little more capable and the captain (Cayetano) looked to have extensive experience.  I got this wrong on both accounts.  Capt Cayetano met us at the marina.  Unfortunately, he only met us to collect the remaining fee.  He then turned the charter over to a young captain and crew and left.  The boat had almost continuous engine warnings throughout the trip and the trip was very slow.  I fish offshore regularly and guess that we were running about 10 knots max.  Takes a long time to get from point to point at 10 knots so lots of charter time is burned on a boat ride and not fishing.  I had selected the 8 hour trip to have time to get outside the bay.  However the captain claimed they could not go because the seas were too rough.  While there were decent swells, the wave periods were very long so it wasn’t rough at all near the mouth of the bay.  It was apparent to me that we could fish beyond the bay safely and without it being rough offshore, and I felt like this was an excuse to stay inside the bay and burn less gas. 

All that said, the captain and crew were nice guys and tried hard.  I just don’t think that they are very experienced and know how to game plan when something changes.  My family did enjoy being on the water but it could have been much better.  We caught a single Dorado in our 8 hour trip.

If you charter Tres Amores and your experience is like mine, don’t expect to see Capt. Cayetano (the person on the video in the booking info) on the water with you or to move very quickly on the water.

It’s not a bad experience but I feel like there are better options to choose.

Was under the assumption that with an 8 Hour trip we’d actually go out and find blue water to chase bigger pelagics- sailfish in particular. That didn’t happen. We basically circled the bay for 8 hours. At first we were trolling for small roosters then we trolled for bonita/Mahi Mahi/Jacks. We trolled trash line for about 20 minutes and then by that time with about 2 hours left they decided it was time to start heading back to the docks. Captain and Deck Hand were friendly however just felt like they make the same circle every day being they have it planned down to the minute how long it out take to get back to the dock. I’ve fished offshore many times in numerous countries and have never felt that way about to trip. Will consider other options next trip.

Very nice boat. Pleasant crew. Lots of fishing time. Boat was very clean. Did have diesel fumes throughout day but I expect that is universal doing these endeavors. Great time overall. Would do again.
