My time on the water is limited due to family and work. When I do get out, I want to maximize my opportunity to catch some fish, and more importantly: have fun. That is why I fish with Gerry. To say he is well connected in the fishing industry is an understatement. It is a rare day when we do not run into one of his buddies on the water. And, for this reason, he is always well informed as to what is biting and where. He has the ability to target multiple species which is great when the bite for one them is off, we change gears (inshore or offshore, freshwater or salt), and fish for another. He is flexible with his time as far as launching the boat and coming back to the ramp. I know if he says “last cast, we gotta go” I have at least 2 more hours of fishing, if I want it. If you tell him you want to fish all day, you better get some sleep the night before. I have worked my entire life in the hospitality industry and recommend my clients to him all the time because of his enthusiastic, positive attitude, and tireless effort. He is equally happy helping beginners (especially kids), or putting the most seasoned angler in a position to catch the fish of a lifetime. If you get to know his wife Maria, she will have a hot meal waiting for you when you get back to the house. I don’t know anyone more in tune with his boat. Most importantly, he can get you home safe when the weather gets sporty. I can’t say enough good things about him. I always have fun and I am always looking forward to our next adventure.

I’m going to preface this review by stating that I have my own saltwater bass boat. However, I wanted to get an expert’s advice as to the “how and where” to fish for calico bass at the island. I have been to the island a few times with friends on my boat, even friends who have fished the island frequently. We have fished different areas of the island with just fair success on the bass. I knew Gerry Mahiue from fishing the local salt water bass tournament series in Southern California and I wanted to get his perspective on fishing San Clemente Island. Well, I was not disappointed. He showed me areas that I had never fished before and put us on good sized calico bass. We fished areas that I had fished in the past with little success and showed me different approaches to fishing the areas. Not surprisingly, we caught fish and good ones. Gerry was also very generous with the information he shared with me. I did bring some of my own bass gear, but he has plenty of tackle for customers to use. I didn’t mind using some of his terminal tackle and his favorite lures on this trip.
His boat is a 21-22 ft. Robalo and it was both fast and comfortable. We averaged 35-40MPH on our return trip from the island, making the crossing in about 1 1/2 hours to Long Beach Harbor. It is very spacious and there was a lot of storage room on his boat. The boat seemed to have a wide beam and it made for a very stable fishing platform. For the women who are thinking about booking a trip with Gerry, there is a built in head in the front of the center console which is an added plus for privacy.
I would definitely book Gerry again and I would highly recommend him to anyone wishing to fish the islands off Southern California, inshore fishing off the coast and also offshore fishing for pelagic fish like tuna and yellowtail.

Was great but I thought we would have some cover from “rain”. Was not prepared for it. Still a great ride.
I’m sorry it rained, I did provide an option for a refund or re-schedule prior to our fishing day. I also had raingear for you to use which you didn’t want to use. My job is to provide a great experience and the rain obviously did not help. Hopefully people understand this
Perfect fishing. Gerry knows where to go. He is good company to talk with. Lot of fun and fish!! Thanks.
Had a great time fishing with Gerry. He knows what he’s doing and it was a lot of fun. Would definitely recommend.
