Hi Charles, good to have you on board. Looking forward for your next fishing trip. Thanks, Capt. Humberto
The good - it is a nice boat and is well-equipped. Fishing gear is very good as well. We got in rough seas but never felt unsafe. The boat is very seaworthy. Captain is very friendly. I think the mate was as well, however he did not speak much English and did not communicate with us very much. Unfortunately, we only caught one mahi.ย But it was a very nice one!ย When the fish rose to the trolled bait,ย the captain a mate seemed to know how to handle things. The bad -ย This was my first time in Puerto Rico. What I have learned is that it seems that the wind settles down overnight and the seas seem relatively calm early. Then as the sun heats the air the wind picks up and so do the seas. I made the reservation long before our trip.ย I was getting nervous because I had not heard from the captain despite a couple emails/messages. Then the night prior to the trip I did get a confirmation message from him. An 8 AM departure time seemed quite late for an offshore fishing trip but I did not want to question him.ย We arrived at the boat on time and unfortunately he was not ready. The mate was not there yet either. No big deal.ย We waited for them to finish rigging,ย and then left. We then had to stop at a little the marina shop to get ice and it was closed. We waited for about 30 minutes for someone to come unlock it to get ice. I have been fishing all my life and I know there are good days and there are bad days. When I booked the trip about a month out I told the captain I was primarily after billfish. I was told it is not the right time of year for blues but could have a chance at whites or sails.ย Then when we arrived at the boat I was told it has been a horrible year for billfish in general.ย As we were trolling our way back to the island, we told the captain we had enough and weโre ready to get back. Even though we got a late start, I will say he was willing to give us our full-time on the boat. The mate cleaned the fish.ย And then put our fillets on the filthy dock.ย When I got back to our place, I got a knife and properly wash them and cut out areas where there were still bones in the fillets. In my opinion, because deep water is so close to the Puerto Rican coast line, a half-day fishing is plenty.

The Pros- Professional Capt and 1st Mate, good equipment and well prepared. Marina allows quick access to the open ocean and we stayed out almost an hour late to try to get something when the fish werenโt biting. The cons- we didnโt catch anything in five hours and actually never even touched a reel as we didnโt have more than one quick nibbleโฆ The ocean swells are big thereโฆ4-6ft is normal in the winter so everyone in our group was sick the entire time. No change in bait or targeted species despite no bites for hours. Overall rough experience as thereโs no discount on the trip despite no action at all. I mean Capt Humberto all the best but will definitely just fish Tarpon next time. Be aware no bites and getting badly sea sick is a real possibility in this part of the oceanโฆThanks for having us anyways!

William, yes the bite was very slow that day but we have no control of it. At this time if the year the seas are shoppy and you have to be ready for it, again we have no control if it. On big game fishing you have to be prepared for it. We do everything to make the trip as enjoyable as posible but we have no control of nature. Thanks, Capt. Humberto
Great trip and hard working crew. Canโt beat anything that fresh.
Great day and its a pleasure having you aboard Double Hook Charters.
