Deep Sea Fishing in Jamaica
There’s a lot to love about the deep sea fishing Jamaica has on its doorstep. Whether you’re a serious tournament angler or a complete beginner, the island is surrounded by great fishing opportunities. Add in a real sense of fun and the guarantee of a great soundtrack and you have the recipe for an awesome day on the water.
What to Catch
The big game hit list includes Blue and White Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, Mahi Mahi, and much, much more. You don’t have to travel far to find them, either, since most of the island is surrounded by steep drop-offs.
Where to Go
Pretty much all of Jamaica’s deep sea fishing charters leave from towns like Montego Bay and Ocho Rios on the north coast. There’s a very good reason for this. Jamaica sits just south of the Cayman Trench, some of the deepest waters in the whole of the Caribbean.
Montego Bay
You don’t have to go far offshore to find fish out of Montego Bay – most boats have their lines in the water as soon as you leave the shore – but they say that some real monsters live out in the remote reaches of the Trench.
Port Antonio
Home to the famous Blue Lagoon, Port Antonio is one of the most popular tourist hotspots on the island. Just like Montego Bay, it also boasts a number of experienced charters that can show you the very best Jamaica has to offer.
How to Fish
Whether you’re chasing monster Marlin or tasty Tuna, you can pretty much guarantee that you’ll be trolling. Most boats are set up exclusively for trolling, with the occasional kite thrown in for added surface action. Both these techniques are great for beginners. The crew will set up your lines and baits. You enjoy the fight and the sight of huge fish on the end of your line. If you fancy something a little different, some boats also offer deep dropping and even Swordfishing on longer trips.
Jamaican big game charters are about more than the fish themselves. The bite is excellent, for sure, but that’s not what makes fishing here special. There’s a real emphasis on fun aboard local charter boats. From providing you with local rum and Red Stripe beer to breaking out the BBQ for a tasty fish cookout, charter captains really make a day of it.
Most charter boats in Jamaica are large offshore sport fishing vessels. These are great for targeting big fish like Marlin and Mahi Mahi. They can also hold large groups, often 10 or more. Just be aware that not everyone will get the chance to fish when the boat is full.
Jamaican fishing trips generally include all the fishing equipment and licenses you need for the day, as well as plenty of beer and rum. Many charter companies can also arrange a BBQ for an extra fee. At the end of the trip, you will be given a portion of the catch to keep. If you plan to release any Billfish you catch, make your intentions known to the crew ahead of time.
When to Go
The country’s top tournaments run in September and October, during Blue Marlin season. If you’re looking for serious action, this is the time to visit. Make sure you reserve early, though – the best boats get booked solid during tournament season.
The deep sea fishing Jamaica has to offer ticks all the boxes for a fun day offshore. Big boats, huge fish, great music, and a ton of fun. If you’re looking for an awesome experience as well as world-class angling, you’ve got to visit Jamaica.
