	What is Spearfishing?</h2>

	Spearfishing is one of the most ancient ways of harvesting fish there is. People have been doing it for thousands of years. And over that time, the simple concept it started out with has evolved. Now, instead of being restricted to fishing with a trident-type weapon, &lsquo;spearos&rsquo; can venture into the deep blue seas, armed with a speargun, pole, or mechanical sling.

	Essentially, most modern spearfishing trips will involve taking a boat ride out to a hot spearfishing destination, getting out, getting wet, and spearing fish. In the water, you will either be scuba diving or you&rsquo;ll be freediving: going under with no artificial breathing support. While both are common, if you really want to impress an inner-circle spearo, you&rsquo;re going to want to practice holding your breath under water.

	For obvious reasons, the concept of &#39;catch and release&#39; is not much of a possibility when spearfishing. That said, this form of fishing has a very low environmental impact - providing it is properly regulated. Most areas of the world only allow spearfishing for species that are in healthy supply. There&rsquo;s no bycatch or damage to the environment. And, because you are underwater, you can spot and remove harmful invasive species, such as the notorious Lionfish.

April is a good time of year to go after Giant Trevally if you can't make the fall season. Catch and release during the off season is always encouraged to keep the fishery healthy.

August is the peak of dry season, so expect lots of sun and little to no rain. So dress accordingly. Great time for swimming, but also fishing for Tuna offshore.

The end of the year also marks the end of good offshore trolling for the next couple of months, so hook that Sailfish while you still have the chance.

Snapper has left the building and won't be back until fall. In the meantime, you still have Grouper, Triggerfish, and Rainbow Runners to keep you company.

Celebrate the start of a new year with some great bottom fishing before it dies down. Red Grouper, Sweetlip Emperor, and Triggerfish are just some of the species you can catch.

Tuna season is upon us! Head down south and go after Yellowfins and Skipjack Tuna to your heart's delight. The harder the fight the greater the satisfaction of a job well done.

GT don't like the dry season, so you won't be seeing much of them during summertime. You will be seeing plenty of Bonito and Spanish Mackerel, though.

Trolling during spring can be very rewarding if the weather is good and the conditions are on your side. Mahi Mahi, as well as Blue and Black Marlin, are catches of the day.

Tuna season is slowly warming up, with Skipjacks being present in great numbers, and a respectable number of Yellowfins making the rounds.

With November comes wet season, as well as some fantastic fishing. From trolling for Tuna to jigging for GTs and fishing for bottom dwellers, the sea is your oyster.

Sweetlip Emperor is back on the menu, and so are other bottom fishing favorites like Red Snapper, Grouper, Triggerfish, and more.

When you get tired of mountain biking, diving, and beach parties, come on to the docks and catch some fish. Giant Trevally fishing is absolutely on fire in September!

	Fishing in Bali is an interesting mixture of modern advances and native authenticity. Some captains prefer to fish from state of the art catamarans, while others run trips aboard local-built wooden boats, known as 'jukungs.' These small outrigger canoes are designed specifically for fishing and have been used by indigenous people here as long as anyone can remember.

	Most Bali fishing charters are concentrated on the southern tip of the island. Giant Trevally, one of the most intense fighting fish in the sea, patrols this high, rocky coastline that looks out onto the Savu Sea. Want to try big game fishing? Travel just 15 miles from Denpasar, and you'll be in waters as deep as 1,000 ft. This is prime hunting ground for big game fish such as Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, and Tunas, as well as reef dwellers such as Amberjack and Snappers.

	From here, the seafloor just keeps dropping. The deeper you get, the higher the chance of Marlin, Sailfish, and more finding their way onto the end of your line. And all of this is still relatively undiscovered in the sportfishing community!

	Types of Fishing</h3>

	Most trips will take you either trolling or bottom fishing. More experienced anglers should try trolling the southern end of Nusa Penida Island, where you can target Mahi Mahi, Yellowfin Tuna, Narrow Barred Spanish Mackerel, and even Blue Marlin. 

	If you haven't fished before, or you want to take some fresh fish back to cook on the beach, try bottom fishing. You have a good chance of landing tasty Snappers and Groupers around Nusa Penida. Locals refer to bottom fishing as 'coral fishing.'

	Up for a challenge? Test yourself against Giant Trevally by casting large poppers to the rocks around the coastline. Just be prepared for one of the most demanding fights of your life!

	You can also catch Swordfish here, but you're unlikely to target it with rod and line. Instead, locals target this deep sea giant exclusively by handling! This may be best left to the local experts – but who are we to say?

	Need to Know</h3>

	Most fishing charters provide everything you need for your trip. It's always possible to bring your own gear, but be warned – tackle rental shops are few and far between on the island. You won't need to worry about a fishing license, just make sure to have a comfy hat on and polarized sunglasses at the ready.
