I'd Rather Be Fishing Charters
Lake Superior's name is quite fitting when it comes to fishing, it's one of the best freshwater fishing grounds in the world, both in size as well as the quality of the fight that the fish provide. The aptly named I'd Rather Be Fishing Charters is keen on showing you exactly why this reputation exists, so join them for an exciting lake adventure!
You will fish from their 32' flybridge boat, the 'Rendezvous II,' manufactured by Trojan. She's powered by twin Chevy engines, each providing 225 HP of thrust – that allows her to develop a maximum cruising speed of 23 knots, more than respectable for a boat her size on this great lake. She can hold up to 6 anglers fishing at the same time in comfort. The boat was originally built in 1982 and restored in 2015; you get the best of both worlds, all the modern amenities you may wish for combined with the high quality of the boat's build.
Captain Nathan Fondness will be your guide on this fishing charter. He'll take you after a variety of local species, such as the Pike, Walleye, Musky, Chinook, and Coho Salmon, as well as the Brown, Lake, and Steelhead Trouts. Light tackle is used exclusively.
Capt. Nathan will take you fishing up to 15 miles offshore, so you should bring adequate clothing. There's no minimum age for kids on board of I'd Rather Be Fishing Charters. Clients are advised to also bring polarized sunglasses, sunscreen, and a waterproof camera. The Rendezvous II is disabled accessible, but the captain asks customers to contact him prior to arriving to work out the details.
If the maximum allowed amount of lake trout is caught, the trip may end earlier as the captain strives to practice ethical fishing and protect wildlife. Once you've reached the limit for this species, you'd have to hook many other lake trouts you won't be able to keep in hopes of catching another species. The rest of the trip can be spent trolling around or sightseeing, or it may conclude earlier; in both cases, the entire balance will be due.

We had a fabulous time celebrating my dad’s 70th birthday. We landed 12 fish, a mix of Lake Trout and Coho Salmon. We also had good fight on plentry more that didnt quite make it to the net. The morning started off cool and crisp but the comfort of the cabin made the trek out of the maria very pleasant. We were out about 6.5 miles when lines went in the water. We landed the first fish, Lake Trout, after about 45 mins. then we had a steady hit if fish for the next 2 hours. Things slowed down for last half of the trip with a fish on every 20-30 mins. Between fish we took in the beauty of the big lake, sun glistinging off the water and the magestic shoreline. Captain Nathan was wonderful as well. He put up with our shenanigans and joined in the fun all while keeping lines in the water and coaching us with each hook. I highly recommend “I’d Rather Be Fishing.” We all said we want to do this again.

We had an absolutely fantastic day on the water with Nathan! Our group included grandparents in their 70s, me, and my two boys (ages 8 and 13), and Nathan was amazing with everyone. He was professional, knowledgeable, patient, and especially great with the kids, making sure they were engaged and having fun the entire trip. The boat was clean, comfortable, and very well maintained. The weather couldn't have been much better—sunny and in the 60s—and Nathan put us right on the fish. We ended up catching 17 fish and made memories our family will be talking about for years. Whether you're fishing with young kids, grandparents, or a mix of ages like we were, I highly recommend booking with Nathan. It was a near-perfect day from start to finish, and we couldn't have asked for a better guide or experience. Thank you, Nathan, for an unforgettable trip!
We had a great trip. The weather was perfect. The csptain knew how to get us on fish. Boat was clean and the gear was in great shape. Caught a limit on walleye and several lake trout. The trolling was easy, anyone can use a reel can pull in a fish. The dock is easy access to the best part of Duluth. We will have to come back again!
First time ever on Lake Superior for a bunch of mostly novice fisherpeople. Captain Nathan was amazing, he explained the process, watched the lines, and ensured that everyone had fun. If you are looking for a fun afternoon out on the lake with friends and fishing, no matter your skill level, Nathan is a great choice.
went fishing on a batchlor trip. captain was great and very helpful. made sure to be on top of when lines were hit and made sure everything went smoothly

Captain Nathan Fodness didn't start out as most captains did, living on the sea. Instead, he grew up inland and only discovered his extreme passion for fishing in his early 20's. As he continued fishing more and more, he discovered he would do this professionally and decided to follow his dream. Capt. Nathan's clients are mostly families with children and he's very excited about teaching kids the joys of angling every time they come on board his charter.
