If you're in Puerto Rico and itch for something different, but exciting to do, then why not come fly fishing? Backcountry Fly Fishing promises an almost surreal experience in the mangroves just outside of San Juan. Hit up the lagoons with your experienced guide, Captain Clery Morales, and experience some of the best fly action possible.

Capt. Clery is a San Juan native and knows these waters like the back of his hand. With over 20 years of local fishing experience, he knows exactly what it takes to attract the biggest fish and to hook 'em aboard. He can't wait to welcome you aboard to teach you the best ways to land that dream catch.

Up to 5 guests are welcome aboard the 23' Ranger boat, built specifically for fishing these waters. Light and with a shallow hull, she'll get you to the shallowest spots, keeping you quiet as you creep up on your prey. Make yourself at home on board, and take advantage of Capt. Clery's offer of free drinks, including beer.

As well as experiencing an unrivaled service, you'll also be using the best fly fishing gear to give you the edge over the fish. Make use of the Sage X 9wt rods, with plenty of custom flies to land on the water.

Snook, Jack Crevalles, Ladyfish, and even Tarpon call these waters home, so get ready for a productive day battling it out with these strong beasts. Marvel as the Silver King leaps out of the water to get off the end of your line, and experience a relentless thrill as these creatures try to run away with your line.

With licenses and drinks included, all you need to do is bring some snacks aboard and settle in for a memorable day out. Come aboard Backcountry Fly Fishing and discover these pristine waters, all the while seeing if you have what it takes to land that trophy catch!

Had a blast chasing tarpon in Puerto Rico!
Half Day Trip (AM) on February 18, 20251 adult1 child

Can't say enough great things about his trip. Took my 12 year old fly fishing for tarpon - his first salt water trip on the fly. Capt Tommy was awesome - easy to work with, knew the area like th back of his hand, and was a great teacher for both of us. The gear, the boat, the cooler loaded with ice cold beverages when it got hot - everything was great. We both caught fish - including a beautiful juvenile tarpon my son hooked up - and jumped a few more. 100% will fish with this outfit and Capt next time I am in PR. Thank you!!

Capt. Fernando Montalvo!
Half Day Trip (AM) on May 12, 20251 adult

I messaged Backwater Tarpon prior to booking to make sure it would be appropriate for a very new fly fisherman. I was quickly notified which day and time would be best with the forecast. Capt Fernando Montalvo was very patient with me. He made sure I had a satisfactory cast prior to bringing me to the lagoon to cast over fish! We caught two fish while Capt Fernando did his best to push us around the lagoon and set me up for success!

Great Day
Half Day Trip (AM) on February 28, 20242 adults

Great day!!! Captain put us on the fish. Great boat and gear. Guides were fun and patient with us as we learned the nuances of salt water fly fishing. They really knew their stuff and worked hard for us. Lots of bites and we did land one fish. Learn the art of the strip set and you'll boat more fish then we did. Totally recommend this trip
