Captain Martin Carranza has been fly fishing all his life, from his early days chasing big trout in Patagonia, Argentina, to the productive grass flats of South Florida, which he’s been fishing since 2001. In between the two, Martin was fortunate enough to be given an opportunity to explore and fish the various hotspots of South and Central America, along with the many fishing grounds of the Caribbean, Europe, and the Azores. Apart from helping his guests tackle the South Florida flats, Martin also owns a lodge in Patagonia and organizes fishing trips to a variety of unique destinations during their high season.
Martin operates a 2018 17’6’’ Beavertail Strike flats skiff, powered by a single Evinrude E-tec 60 HP engine, with a maximum capacity of 3 passengers per trip, excluding the Captain. The boat features a Minn-Kota electric motor and comes furnished with the regular selection of navigational gear, including a Garmin 740 Echomap GPS, fish finder and VHF radio. Sodas, bottled water as well as a sandwich for the day are all included in the overall trip price.
Capt. Martin considers South East Florida (from Miami to the Middle keys) to offer some of the most productive flats fishing opportunities around. The waterways of Biscayne Bay, Islamorada, and the Everglades National Park are ample with Bonefish, Tarpon, Permit, Redfish, Snook, Barracuda, Peacock Bass, several sharks species and more.
Martin utilizes a variety of quality fishing gear, depending on your preferences and target species. Fly fishing tackle includes Thomas and Thomas rods, Hatch and Allen fly reels complete with Rio fly lines. As for the spinning tackle, it mostly consists of Shimano, Loomis and Six gill rods and reels. When fishing with live bait, Capt. Carranza prefers shrimp, blue crabs, finger mullet, and pilchards.
