Mauna Loa/Bad Co Sportfishing
Make the most of your time in Kailua-Kona and go fishing with Mauna Loa/Bad Co Sportfishing. Having logged many hours on these tides, Captain Kaiwi Joe is prepared to put you on fish.
Blue Marlin, Striped Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, Skipjack Tuna, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, and more can be found in these waters if conditions are right. On these trips, it's common to troll using light or heavy tackle.
Families making a day of it will be glad to know that kids are welcome aboard! If you don't have a child-sized life vest of your own, be sure to ask if there's one on board. Don't forget to bring snacks to keep up those energy levels!
Capt. Kaiwi Joe operates a 40' Miller sportfishing vessel with room for 6 passengers. It comes with outriggers, a fighting chair, and all the essentials. There's a toilet on board for your convenience. The boat will supply rods and reels for you, as well as lures.
A First Mate will be there to make sure everything is running smoothly. A 20% tip is customary to show your appreciation for their hard work.
You won't need a fishing license and while we promote conservation and release most all our Marlin, we will gladly filet any Mahi Mahi, Ono (Wahoo) or Ahi we catch for you to take enough for a few good meals while you're here in Hawaii.
Don't forget to bring sunglasses, sunscreen (non-spray). We have plenty bottled water and assorted gatorades, alcohol is allowed in moderation, just be sure to avoid hard liquor as well as glass bottles. There will be some light snacks (pastries in the a.m., chips, mixed nuts etc) provided on board.

Very good with families going out on an adventure together. Although we did not catch any fish, they worked very hard to obtain objective. Knowledgeable Capt. at first mate, good equipment, very nice boat, presented a great spread for trolling. Just because we did not catch, do not let that stop you from booking with them. They are very experienced, they will treat your family well, and keep them safe, they teach, work very hard, and they keep a clean and tidy boat/equipment at all times. They are very passionate about what they do for a living!

Thank you Curt, Wes and I had a great time with you and the family!! We'll keep an eye on the moon phase and book our next trip accordingly!!

Captain Joe and First Mate Wes were great. We hit a big Marlin, but weren't able to hook it, but it was a great day anyway. Highly Recommended.

The crew of the Mauna Loa were fantastic and knowledgeable and made every effort to get the fish to the boar. Sometimes the fish just don't want to cooperate. Highly recomend fishing with Capt. Joe and his hard working deckhand Wes!

Starting out on the half/full day open party boats in So. Cal. in my early teens it didn't take long to realize fishing was going to be a career choice! Working my way up to the long range fleet fishing farther south of the border catching giant yellowfin, wahoo and marlin the blue water, big game fishing addiction was set in stone. Late in 1989 the decision was made to move to Kona Hi. the blue marlin capital of the world where I've lived for 35 years - commercial fishing the offshore seamounts many years before starting a family and wanting to spend time closer to home charter fishing. The reward of charter fishing over the years has been great, seeing newcomers to the sport as well as seasoned anglers catch the fish of their dreams but its the next generation of junior anglers catching their first gamefish that's most enjoyable!!
