Captain Ralph Thoren owns and operates Y Knot Charters, a 44ft Bonner powered by twin 550HP diesel engines, with enough room on board to accommodate groups of up to 6 anglers per trip. The boat features a complete pilot house and 4 air conditioners on board, with a total of 6 bunks organized in 2 separate staterooms. Among other on-board amenities, the vessel sports a bathroom with full shower, and comes outfitted with 2 refrigerators, a microwave, stove/oven and an ice-maker. A variety of classic navigational and marine technology is present on board, including a GPS, radio and fish finder.
Captain Ralph has a long-lasting passion for scuba diving and fishing; he first started diving back in 1992, opening a small dive shop in Fairmont, Minnesota soon thereafter and operating several dive boats over the next decade. After purchasing the Y-Knot in 2003, Ralph has been discovering the fishing and diving potential of the Gulf, including the areas of Sanibel-Captiva Island and the Intercoastal Waterway from Fort Meyers to West Palm Beach. He’s also clocked out on over 1100 miles of cruising in the waters surrounding the Abaco Islands, Bahamas in the season of 2005. He finally settled in the Keys in 2006, and considers the local waters to offer prolific diving and fishing opportunities.
The Y Know crew specializes in offshore and reef/wreck fishing, spearfishing and scuba diving in the areas of Key West, Marquesas and the Dry Tortugas National Park. A variety of game species inhabit these waters, including Tuna, Dorado, Kingfish and even an occasional Wahoo and Sailfish, whereas bottom fishing often produces a variety of grouper and snappers. Each trip includes all the appropriate fishing gear provided by the crew, as well as bait, ice, snacks, bottled water and soft drinks.
