Fishing in Greece

Always wanted to fish like a local? Hop aboard one of the many fishing charters in Greece. Local captains across the country offer up a whole host of angling adventures targeting world-famous saltwater species. You’ll be able to get your fish on in one of three fish-filled seas – the Ionian, the Aegean, and the Mediterranean.

Your target species tend to stay the same around the country. Mighty Bluefin Tuna are popular, and are often joined by Skipjack and Albacore varieties. Opt for a trip that lasts at least six hours to get the most out of your day. You can troll or try handlining – just make sure you bring a good pair of gloves!

Tuna aren’t the only hard-fighting fish here. Marlin lurk around the islands during the summer months, as well as Swordfish, so why not opt for a full day Billfish battle? Trolling is popular and, on your way to the hotspots, you’ll likely bottom fish for Dentex and Common Pandora.

If you’re looking to stock your cooler with a tasty Greek favorite, you can cast a line around the shorelines for Squid. These trips usually take place under the cover of darkness in fall and winter, and are a great option for families. Trips lasting 4-5 hours yield plentiful results, and give you time to have your catch cooked up in a local taverna.

You’ll find charters dotted all over the country, docked at local ports. Santorini, Legrena, and Paliouri are Tuna-fishing favorites, and Zante is a hotspot for Marlin. Squid lurk around Rhodes. No matter where you go, you’ll find a captain waiting to take you out!

Rules & Regulations

Whether you’re fishing alone or alongside a local captain, you don’t need a license in Greece. Some species are subject to restrictions due to overfishing, and your captain will tell you more about this.

Greece Fishing Seasons

January

January is one of the quieter fishing seasons in Greece, but you can cast a line for tasty Squid around the islands. Head to Chios to see ship models being carried by singing fishermen on New Years Eve.

February

Average temperatures are around 10°C, yet that doesn’t stop Apokries, a collection of extravagant carnivals happening around Greece. Things are picking up under the water too, with Squid being plentiful.

March

Easter is a big deal for the Greek Orthodox, so keep this holiday in mind if you’re traveling in March (the date changes yearly) and plan your time around it. Under the water, you can hook the first few Dentex!

April

There are plenty of events to enjoy in April, from Athens International Film Festival to their Jazz Festival. And as for the angling action on offer? April sees Bluefin Tuna arrive in larger numbers, and Dentex fishing is hot.

May

Fishing in May remains very much the same as in April. It's all about Dentex and Bluefin Tuna! Skipjack Tuna are also on offer, and you can cast a line for toothy Barracuda, too.

June

The Athens & Epidaurus Festival, which begins this month, is a huge cultural event that draws crowds from across the globe. Under the water, a whole other event is taking place: the arrival of the first Swordfish!

July

Get into the Greek sunshine, it'll do you a world of good! Take in a show at the Hydra Puppet Festival or at the Philippi Festival in Kavala, or head out on a fishing trip, where you'll target huge Tuna and Swordfish.

August

More festivals take place on land this month, including Olympus Festival, and the Aegina International Music Festival. The waters around Greece are bustling with Tuna, Swordfish, Dentex...the list goes on!

September

Athens has an International Film Festival in September. Children go back to school, which means tourist attractions are much quieter, as well as the waters! Swordfish fishing remains hot, as does Tuna fishing.

October

Ochi Day is celebrated on the 28 so expect parades and celebrations throughout Greece! Under the water, you can go after the last of the Swordfish and Tuna, or head out at nighttime for a Squid fishing adventure.

November

November is the beginning of Greece's off-season. The weather is cool, the tourists are gone, but life goes on in Greece, and so does the fishing! Squid are popular, as well as Dentex, Amberjack, and small Tuna.

December

There are plenty of traditions in Greece around the lead up to Christmas – the cold won’t slow these guys down! Squid fishing is a popular winter tradition. Join in on the fun and catch a unique Christmas dinner option!
