In Long Beach, life revolves around the water. This Southern California city has stunning beaches, a huge downtown port, and, of course, fantastic angling. Hop aboard a Long Beach fishing charter and see why many of the surrounding waterways are considered the birthplace of modern day sportfishing.

Long Beach’s inshore waters consist of rocky bottoms teeming with California Halibut and Rockfish. Pair that with vibrant kelp beds stocked with Calico Bass, White Seabass, and California Sheephead and you’ve got an action-packed, year-round fishery.

Long Beach’s crowning jewel, however, is its proximity to Catalina Island. Travel just 20 miles from the coast and you’ll come across Yellowfin Tuna, Mahi Mahi, and Blue Marlin. Head an additional 30 miles out and you’ll reach San Clemente Island, a haven for Yellowtail Amberjack. Lastly, if you want to fish the open waters, numerous honey holes lie all the way up to 60 miles from the mainland, offering trophy-sized fish.

If you’re planning on fishing near Catalina Island or beyond, your best bet is to set aside enough time for a full day or extended full day trip. This way, you’ll account for travel time and give yourself your best shot at a trophy! Inshore fishing happens within 10 miles of shore and a half day trip provides a great introduction to the waters.

There are two main starting points in Long Beach: Long Beach Shoreline Marina and Alamitos Bay Marina. The former departs from downtown Long Beach, whereas the latter is located south of downtown, towards Seal Beach.

Rules & Regulations

Recreational anglers need to purchase a fishing license either online or at authorized California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) counters. California fisheries are heavily regulated, with possession limits, minimum sizes, and seasons changing from year to year. It’s best to head out with a knowledgeable captain to ensure you’re fishing within the law.

January

If nothing else, you can count on the iconic Calico Bass to save the trip. Fishing is slow for some species, but you can sample some nice Halibut and Sculpin.

February

The offer starts expanding as you can know catch highly praised White Seabass. Halibut are also out there in the water. Board a charter and go get some feisty Calico Bass.

March

As the temperature goes up, many more fish start showing up. You can target Sheepshead, Scuplin, Rock Cod, Halibut. If you want more Bass action, White Bass are ready as ever, and Calico will follow.

April

The spring is here in full swing, and anglers can get bags full of nice pelagics and bottom dwellers. Calico and White Seabass are on fire, with more Sculpin, Rock Cod, Sheepshead, and Halibut ready to take the bait.

May

Barracuda are showing up, so you may want to get to the Huntington Flats and explore the local fisheries. You can also get insane Sand Bass. Expect non-stop action with Halibut, Lingcod, Yellowtail, and White Seabass.

June

It’s getting hot. The summer days are here, which means things are about to get nasty both inshore and offshore. Barracuda, Bluefin, Yellowfin Tuna, more Calico Bass, and Bonito and Albacore in full swing.

July

Offshore you can get super game fish. Head to the Catalina Island, and get Mahi, impressive Black Seabass, Tuna, and Marlin. Around the flats there are Barracuda and Bass.

August

Giant fish are still here and your fishing trip can easily get you a trophy size catch. Black Seabass, Yellowfin Tuna, Mahi, Marlin, Wahoo, all available on a full day trip.

September

Summer break might be over, but these fish are not done with your bait. Yellowfin Tuna are hungry as ever and you can also sample Mahi, Marlin, impressive Bass.

October

The offshore game is still solid, with schools of Yellowfin Tuna hanging around deep waters. You can get also Calico Bass, Halibut, and Bonito.

November

As offshore waters see the last of pelagics, remember that Halibut are there, along with Calico Bass, Lingcod, and Rock Cod.

December

The fishing season slowly comes to a close as anglers reminisce their great spring and summer catches. A trip out of Long Beach can still get you Halibut and Rock Cod.

There are many options this time of the year. The bass fishing in the local waters and at the islands are very active this time of the year. There is also a possibility of catching pelagic fish such as yellowfin and bluefin tuna. There is always yellowtail fishing either at the islands or just outside at the Horseshoe Kelp area.

Definitely one of the best fishing trips I've been on. Gerry was awesome! He knew where to go and how to work the fish to land some amazing and exhausting catches. My arms are very tired after today but I will remember this for years to come.

Our trip was wonderful and fun! We loved having the small boat to ourselves and being able to talk with the captain about where we wanted to go and what we wanted to fish for. Captain Gerry was super helpful and friendly, constantly helping us bait our hooks, checking our fish sizes, and giving us pointers to have a great time. And, we caught lots of fish! We will definitely schedule with Captain Gerry again.

Gerry is a great guy. Obviously a father by the way he treated my son. Couldn’t ask for a more patient and likable guy. We caught a bunch of bass and even went out to look for tuna. Found a swarm of dolphins that blew our minds instead. Had a great time through and through.

Captain Gerry was as great as you could hope. Very knowledgeable on where to find the fish, and he’ll make sure you catch plenty. He is very accommodating to novice fishermen, so don’t feel intimidated if you’re not experienced. Weather was very poor on our trip but we still caught 20+ calico bass and had a couple of halibut try for the bait. Will definitely book again, next time we’re in California!
