Fishing in Apalachicola

The small town of Apalachicola revolves around the water. From the maritime museum to the numerous seafood restaurants and bustling marinas, there’s no getting away from it. And why would you want to? Hop aboard an Apalachicola fishing charter and discover Florida’s “Forgotten Coast” in style.

You can engage in both freshwater and saltwater fishing in Apalachicola. The town’s namesake river, along with the St. Marks and East Rivers pour into the Gulf just a stone’s throw away. Bass is the name of the game in the rivers, with Largemouth and Hybrid Striped Bass offering plenty of action.

Some saltwater fish make their way up the river when the conditions are right, but the Apalachicola Bay is where you’ll find the most fish. Redfish and Spotted Seatrout are ubiquitous here, with Flounder, Sheepshead, and Black Drum also on offer.

Mackerel, Pompano, Cobia, and Jack Crevalle sometimes linger near the inlet, giving you the temptation to head offshore. Beyond St. George Island, you’ll find reefs full of Snappers, Amberjack, Groupers, and bigger Cobia and Kingfish to keep you on your toes. Head even further out and monster Sharks, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, and Tuna could be biting!

Anglers of all ages and abilities are welcome to indulge in the Apalachicola fishing scene. Spend as little as a couple of hours on the shallow waters inshore, all the way up to 10+ hours in the deep waters offshore, and live out your fishing fantasies.

Rules & Regulations

Fishing aboard a saltwater charter in Apalachicola will mean that you don’t need to get a license. However, if you’re going out with a river guide, you’ll need to get a Florida freshwater fishing license. Wherever you head, your professional captain will make sure you stick to the latest size and bag limits.

Apalachicola Fishing Seasons

January

Early in the year, your luck is best in the backwaters and creeks, where Redfish and Speckled Trout are escaping the cold waters of the bay. Bring the little ones and teach them the ways of the water!

February

With temperatures ranging anywhere from 45-65°F, you can expect to have the most success while fishing inshore for Sheepshead or casting lines in the river for Redfish and Trout – there's plenty to keep you warm!

March

Spring marks the arrival of many migratory species, with early Spanish Mackerel and Pompano arriving first. Redfish, Speckled Trout, and Flounder fill the bay, so there's something for everyone.

April

Fish the bay for Pompano, Spanish Mackerel, Redfish, Flounder. Meanwhile the first of this year’s Cobia arrives nearshore. King Mackerel and Jack Crevalle aren’t far behind, as the fishing offshore heats up.

May

The warm weather means that it's a great time to start exploring the waters beyond the bay. Fish the nearshore reefs for Snapper and Grouper or scan the flats for Redfish, Flounder, and much more.

June

Come June, it’s all about Tarpon, Tarpon, Tarpon! Local bays will be swarming with the Silver King. Plenty of other bruisers are biting too, including a variety of Sharks and big game fish offshore.

July

Redfish and Speckled Trout hit their low season in July, but there’s still plenty of fish to keep you occupied. Fish for Mackerel, Tripletail and Sharks nearshore, or head to the deep in seach of Mahi and more.

August

No matter where you drop your line, chances are you’ll hook into a hard-fighting catch. Tripletail, Sharks, and Tarpon are all fair game. Offshore you’ll find Triggerfish, Amberjack, Mahi Mahi, and big game creatures.

September

The end of summer doesn’t mean the end of great fishing here in Apalachicola! Amberjack, Mahi Mahi, and Jack Crevalle are still at their peak and your chances of landing almost any other species are very good, too.

October

Redfish and Speckled Trout are back to steal the spotlight inshore. Catch yourself a Flounder and make it a slam! Nearshore, the reefs are teeming with delicious fish, and Red Snapper can be caught on weekends!

November

November sees large numbers of tourists flocking to Apalachicola for The Florida Seafood Festival, an annual 2-day event dedicated to this great fishery and local seafood. Come and join the party while also fishing for fun!

December

Some local fishing charters may shut down at this time of year, but you’ll still be able to fish for Redfish, Speckled Trout, and Bass in the river. Temperatures range from 45-65°F, so be sure to bring extra layers.
