Fishing in Fort Myers Beach

With a beautiful sandy beach stretching along the Estero Island, along with numerous fishing charters, Fort Myers Beach is a true fishing paradise. Surrounded by prolific bays, giant mangrove islands, and with the Gulf of Mexico at your fingertips, it’s ready to cater to your every need. Perfect for a relaxing day with your family, as well as a serious sportfishing adventure, this versatile fishery will leave you breathless!

In the summer months, one of the best ways to spend your day is going after Tarpon that migrate past these sandy shores. Exploring the shallow flats will prove to be just as exciting – you'll reel in Snook, Speckled Trout, Redfish, Grouper, and the occasional Shark. Visit the reefs further from the shore, and you can expect to bag some trophy Cobia, Permit, Sheepshead, Snapper, and Spanish Mackerel.

For some quality family fun, booking a half day trip and staying closer to shore is a great option. You’ll get to spend a few hours introducing your kids to the joys of fishing, and making some new memories. Looking to fill your bags with some good-sized specimens? A full day trip will maximize your chances. For a bucket-list catch, consider going on one of the specialized trips on offer, targeting Tarpon or Shark.

You don’t have to look hard for the perfect charter in Fort Myers Beach, as you’ll find them all along the island. You can visit the Matanzas Pass, as well as San Carlos Island, and you’ll be spoiled for choice on Pelican Bay. Everywhere you turn you'll see fishing charters eager to take you on an adventure!

Rules & Regulations

If you’re heading out on a fishing charter, you don’t have to worry about fishing licenses as the captain will take care of them for you. Note that regulations apply to some fish species, so the best way to go out is with a reputable captain who’ll keep you informed.

Fort Myers Beach Fishing Seasons

January

Get the New Year started with a bang by fishing in Fort Myers Beach. Redfish and Speckled Trout bite well at this time of year. Look for Goliath Grouper in the backcountry or search under crab traps' marker buoys for a tasty Tripletail.

February

Winter fishing continues, and Florida's glorious climate will make sure that you enjoy it. This is a great time to target Trout and big Black Drum. Don't miss out on the "Shellabration!" festival on Sanibel and Captiva Islands.

March

Just in time for spring break, March in Fort Myers Beach sees a whole host of activities and fishing options. From the famous Lions Club Shrimp Festival to the arrival of Cobia nearshore, there is plenty to keep you busy.

April

Tarpon starts to flood into Fort Myers Beach in April. Head out with a spinning rod and practice your sight casting – as long as the winds are calm, you’ll have a wonderful time on the water!

May

The Tarpon season gets serious at this time of year and becomes the priority for the next two months. The nearshore reefs attract Kingfish and Cobia. Don't miss the annual Taste of the Beach festival for some local culinary fare.

June

The weather gets very hot, particularly in the middle of the day. Stay comfortable by fishing in the early morning or evenings. The Snapper bite is very good offshore and in the Estero River, while Sharks are found all over the flats.

July

There is some risk of rain in the afternoons from now until September, although the weather remains very hot. Fish around jetties and piers in the early morning, where inshore fish will be hiding out in the cooler water.

August

August is hot in Fort Myers Beach and is a great time to relax on the sugar-sands. Bottom fishing offshore is very good but can be disrupted by afternoon thunderstorms. Watch out – these can materialize at a moment's notice.

September

The weather gradually starts to cool in Fort Myers Beach in September, and although the rains ease, there is still the chance of the odd afternoon storm. The beaches are less crowded and the waterways are active and full of life.

October

October is a transitional month that sees changes in water temperatures and fish behavior. Don't miss the amazing Redfish bite and check out the nearshore waters for Cobia as they migrate south for the winter.

November

November is a great month in Fort Myers Beach. It's time for the US's largest Sand Sculpting Championship, as well as the Ft Myers Beach Pirate Festival! From ship battles to kids fishing contests, this is not an event you want to miss.

December

With weather in the 70s and inshore and flats fishing on top form, this is the ideal location for your winter vacation. Don't miss the Fort Myers Beach Christmas Boat Parade for a fleet of illuminated, decorated, carol-playing boats.
