Fishing in Solomons

Solomons Island is a small fishing village nestled between the Patuxent River and Chesapeake Bay. It’s a popular weekend getaway for local Marylanders looking to drop a few lines and catch delicious fish. If you’re just getting started, book a trip with a Solomons fishing charter and get ready for a fun adventure on the Chesapeake Bay!

There are lots of great spots where you can post up for the day and reel in exciting fish. The mouth of the Patuxent River can reap rewarding catches, including Stripers, Flounder, Spotted Seatrout, and Weakfish. Want to hook another type of inshore sea creature? You can also target Crabs here, too!

If you’d like to go after big game inshore fish, you can pick a charter to take you deeper into the bay and target the likes of Cobia, Bluefish, Whiting, and Spanish Mackerel. Solomons is surrounded by inlets and creeks that provide great secluded action as well. Have a guide take you to Back or Mill Creek and catch Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, as well as Rainbow and Brown Trout.

If you’re planning on staying inshore or in the backwaters, a shorter, half-day trip will suffice. A full day trip is your best bet if you plan on hitting the bay. That way you can fish all day, hit several different spots, and see where the hottest bites are. Take a look at some of the local charters in the area, invite your whole family, and start planning your adventure today!

Rules & Regulations

All Maryland saltwater charters are licensed to cover everyone on board. However, if you’ll be fishing the Patuxent River or any other body of freshwater, you’ll have to buy a fishing license before you head out. If you plan on fishing without a licensed charter and you’re over the age of 16, you’ll have to buy a license regardless of whether you’re fishing in freshwater or saltwater.

Solomons Fishing Seasons

January

Don’t let the cold weather discourage you from going out and challenging yourself to some winter action. Just because the fish are sluggish this time of year, doesn’t mean they’re not out there!

February

Largemouth Bass and Crappie slowly start to creep into the picture. Target Bass close to the rocky banks along the Patuxent River or Crappie in shallow, sandy bottoms of the river.

March

March marks the beginning of Flounder season in Maryland. Pick a charter that will take you bottom fishing in the bay and catch your limit for the day!

April

It’s time to go crabbing! Grab a bucket and toss a line off the pier and see what you can catch. This is a great family activity and recommended for all levels of experience.

May

Striper season is finally here, so pick a charter that’ll take you trolling in the bay. If you’re a seasoned angler, try something different and go fly fishing for the ultimate challenge!

June

The weather is nice outside and so is the fishing. You can catch a wide range of fish in June, including Cobia, Bluefish, Striped Bass, Flounder, Red and Black Drum, Spotted Seatrout, and Weakfish.

July

Things really start to heat up on the bay in July. Plan a weekend getaway with the family and plan to catch Striped Bass, Redfish, Spotted Seatrout, and Flounder. Tucked away in the inlets and creeks, you’ll find Perch, Rainbow Trout, and Largemouth Bass.

August

Everything is biting in August – from Whiting and Bluefish in the bay to Smallmouth Bass and Yellow Perch in the river. You can experience a little bit of everything!

September

Early fall is a great time for fishing in the bay, especially if you’re targeting Whiting. Other top catches this month include Spanish Mackerel, Bluefish, Striped Bass, and Cobia.

October

Now is a good time to target big Stripers in the bay. Summer Flounder, Croaker, and Perch are also some other likely targets in October.

November

Striped Bass fishing is still hot. Trolling with live bait or artificial lures is an effective technique when chasing Maryland Rockfish.

December

The season winds down as Christmas time approaches. However, you can still target Striped Bass in the Chesapeake Bay.
