Fishing in Ludington

The “Number 1 Salmon Fishing Port in Michigan” has a lot to offer visiting anglers. It’s located right on the shores of Lake Michigan, and provides direct access to the mouth of the Pere Marquette River. Head out on one of the many Ludington fishing charters on offer, and you’ll have the chance to explore two fantastic fisheries!

Lake Michigan really needs no introduction. It’s a freshwater fishing staple, thanks to the world-famous species it holds. Depart from Ludington and you can cast your line for all of ‘em! Spring sees huge Brown Trout, summer brings Lake Trout and Steelhead, and fall is considered the best time to get your hands on Chinook and Coho. Captains offer a variety of trips, including half day adventures suited to newbies and full day excursions for more experienced anglers.

Then there’s the Pere Marquette River. It’s the birthplace of brown Trout, so it comes as no surprise that the spring and summer months are full of world-class trophy Trout fishing opportunities! Many local anglers choose to cast a line on the fly for their catch. The rest of the year offers great Salmon and Steelhead fishing. Again, you’ll find captains running trips anywhere from a few hours on the water to a full day chasing your chosen species.

You’ll find Ludington fishing charters dotted along the lakefront and the mouth of the Pere Marquette River. Lake Michigan charters are most popular during fall, whereas summer sees anglers flock here to explore the river. Make sure you time your trip wisely!

Rules & Regulations

Any angler over the age of 16 needs a valid fishing license to cast a line in Ludington. Some species, such as Salmon and Trout, require specific fishing stamps too. Your captain will be able to tell you more about this.

Ludington Fishing Seasons

January

In January, find yourself a local guide and explore Ludington's ice fishing opportunities if the weather allows. Head to the tributaries for Perch fishing or target Northern Pike.

February

Before the ice begins to melt, you can still enjoy fishing for Northern Pike and Perch in one of the local lakes and rivers. Be very cautious with the ice conditions, though!

March

Boats begin to head out onto the lake, and trollers see nice numbers of Brown Trout. Shore anglers are casting their lines for Brownies and Lake Trout. Ludington's fishing is really warming up right now!

April

The Pere Marquette area produces Perch in March, if you feel like targeting these tasty Panfish. Shoreline trolling trips are also a great way to explore the lake on an early fall trip.

May

The lake's surface is getting warmer., as well as the Pere Marquette River. Lake Trout fishing is strong, and Chinook Salmon can be caught in 150-200 feetvof water. You can even find a couple of Walleye by the piers.

June

Summer has truly arrived, which can only mean that Lake Michigan's fishing opportunities are getting hotter. The water is warm and is home to various types of Salmon and Trout. Happy fishing!

July

In July, fishing yields nice doses of Salmon and Trout. You can hit Lake Michigan and troll its plentiful waters, or cast a line in the plentiful Pere Marquette River.

August

Nothing beats a trip to Lake Michigan on a warm summer morning in August. You can enjoy fishing for various types of Salmon and Trout before they make their way to the tributaries to spawn.

September

Salmon and Trout are ready to make their way upstream. You can chase them close to shore on a warm afternoon or morning, or head to the Pere Marquette River for some angling action.

October

It's all about river fishing in October! The waters of the Pere Marquette are home to Trout and Salmon. Grab your fly fishing or spinning gear, find a guide, and head out on an exciting adventure.

November

You can enjoy fishing the waters of Ludington Set Park for Perch if you don’t feel like giving up on jumbo fish just yet. You'll find 'em hanging out in deeper waters, along with Steelhead, in the Pere Marquette.

December

In December, the Pere Marquette is full of Northern Pike and can also hold Perch. Steelhead can also be found early in December if you know where to look. Be careful when ice fishing!
