Fishing in Harkers Island

Fishing on Harkers Island gives you the authentic Crystal Coast experience. Located only a few miles away from Beaufort and Morehead City, Harkers Island still has the tranquility of a small town. This is a favorite destination for visitors who want to fish in peace and quiet, and some of them even decide to move here for good. Even with its small-town charm, Harkers Island can deliver some epic big game fishing adventures.

Half day fishing trips take you to inshore and nearshore waters, where you’ll target Flounder, Bluefish, Spanish Mackerel, Kingfish, Little Tunny, Red Drum, and Shark. Depending on the fish you want to catch, you’ll mostly be trolling, popping, and bottom fishing. When you’re up for some serious action, take a trip that lasts at least eight hours and head out offshore. Local guides go 30+ miles off the coast and target Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Barracuda, and Wahoo.

The fishing season never stops but it has two highlights. The first one is from April–May, and the second, more popular one, is from late September–November. During fall, you can expect to encounter huge schools of Redfish, Little Tunny, and Shark, and have a blast even on a five-hour trip.

Harkers Island is accessible by car but you don’t have to go there directly. Most fishing guides depart from nearby Beaufort and Morehead City and it only takes a few minutes to reach the island’s fishing spots. The guides cover your fishing license and equipment, so you only need to decide what you want to catch.

Explore the Harkers Island fishing scene and discover the never-ending bliss of the Atlantic coast.

Harkers Island Fishing Seasons

January

Most charters are closed at the moment. However, if you can find one that's running, this is the time to take on Bluefin Tuna offshore. You can also find Striped Bass and some Trout in the sounds.

February

If you ever dreamed of taking on giant Bluefin Tuna, this is your moment. The biggest fish of the season are starting to show up offshore. Book early, as many charters are away for the winter.

March

Giant Bluefin Tuna are still going strong in remote waters offshore. In the shallows, things are slowly picking up, with Red and Black Drum, Speckled Trout, Bluefish, and more.

April

The charter season is officially in full swing! Reds, Trout, Bluefish, and more are biting inshore. Further out, the last of the Bluefin hand over to the incoming Yellowfin bite, keeping lines tight and anglers sweating.

May

Cobia season opens in May, and anglers state-wide speed out to the local structure to land themselves a monster. Bottom fish like Grouper and Wreckfish are also open, making for a real fishy feast.

June

The big game bite warms up with the weather, bringing Blue and White Marlin, Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, and Bigeye Tuna to town. Inshore, expect Spanish Mackerel, Drum, and more.

July

Escape the heat as you cruise offshore in search of Billfish and Tuna. Otherwise, head to Pamlico Sound in the evening to take on a variety of fish. And of course, Red and Black Drum are still biting well.

August

There are fish everywhere you look in August. Marlin and Tuna are hunting offshore. Hit the wrecks, and you'll find Amberjack, Grouper, and the first big "Smoker" King Mackerel.

September

It's Flounder season inshore, so grab your rod, gig, or bow and get ready for a delicious dinner. Huge Kingfish arrive at the local structure, and the biggest Red Drum you'll ever see show up in the shallows.

October

Bag yourself some tasty Flatfish before the seasons closes. While you're there, you can also try your luck against big Red Drum, Speckled Trout, Bluefish, and Striped Bass. Yellowfin are still biting offshore.

November

The charter seasons starts to wind down as the first Bluefin Tuna show up near to shore. This is a great time to target Striped Bass, and the Drum are still around in force.

December

Most charter boats start fishing commercially in December. There's a reason for that: Bluefin season is in full swing, and everyone wants to bag some tasty sashimi. Are you up to the challenge?
