Fishing in Cape May

Cape May, New Jersey, offers world-class saltwater fishing adventures where the Atlantic Ocean meets Delaware Bay. This prime location delivers diverse angling opportunities year-round, from inshore bay excursions to thrilling offshore big-game pursuits. Target abundant species like Striped Bass, Flounder, and Black Seabass in the sheltered bays during summer, or venture into nearshore waters for aggressive Bluefish and Tautog. For adrenaline-packed action, offshore charters pursue Yellowfin Tuna, Mahi Mahi, and majestic Blue Marlin over underwater canyons, with peak seasons running May through September.

Anglers enjoy exceptional flexibility with half-day family trips exploring Cape May's scenic canals and wrecks, alongside specialized overnight expeditions targeting trophy Swordfish or Mako Sharks. The region's seasonal rhythms provide consistent action: spring ignites with Striped Bass runs and seabass openings, summer delivers tournament-worthy offshore catches, while autumn offers trophy Tuna and Marlin blitzes. Even winter yields hearty coastal species like Blackfish for dedicated enthusiasts.

Cape Point State Park and Sunset Beach provide iconic surf-fishing spots, while experienced local captains leverage decades of knowledge to navigate productive grounds like the Cape May Reef and Delaware Bay channels. With US Coast Guard-certified charters featuring modern amenities and expert crews, every trip promises comfort and safety whether you're a novice or seasoned angler. Discover why Cape May remains a top Northeast destination where memorable catches and breathtaking coastal views converge.

Cape May Fishing Seasons

January

We’re not going to lie, winter isn’t the hottest time for fishing any more than it is for weather. There are decent catches of Tautog, Crab, and Bluefish for hardy anglers, though.

February

Walk the beach with your significant other, taking in the South Jersey shoreline without a soul in sight. Once that’s over, head out to catch some tasty Blackfish for dinner.

March

Shark fishing picks up offshore in March, with Makos, Hammerheads, and more toothy beasts showing up around deep-water banks. Tautog are closed for harvest throughout March.

April

Blackfish are back on the menu and biting hard after their spring closure. Weakfish show up in big numbers, and Striped Bass fishing kicks off with a bang. The sportfishing season has started!

May

Tautog and Seabass make for great food fishing while Striped Bass and Bluefish keep sportfishers happy. Offshore, the first Yellowfin Tuna can show up on a good year.

June

June is the start of tournament season, with the South Jersey Shark Tournament and the Canyon Club Overnight Tuna Tournament bringing in fish almost as big as the prizes!

July

The tournaments continue throughout July, with the family-friendly South Jersey Offshore Showdown and the much more competitive Stone Harbor Marlin Tournament.

August

The MidAtlantic is the most important event in the New Jersey fishing calendar. This event pays out over $3,000,000 in prizes every year, drawing anglers from across the country.

September

Tournament season has finished, but that doesn’t mean the action is over! Target Blue and White Marlin and Mahi Mahi offshore while Speckled Trout and Flounder flood the bay.

October

Big Mako Sharks and Bluefin Tuna show up for one last battle in October. In the bay, Tautog, Speckled Trout, Flounder, and more are still biting hard, making for tasty table fare.

November

Cape May’s summer visitors may have moved on, but Striped Bass, Blackfish, and Winter Flounder are more than enough to keep you busy in November.

December

Enjoy some of the best Striper fishing Cape May has to offer, then head home with lots of tasty fish for dinner. Cow Stripers are always on our Christmas list!
