Fishing in Highlands

Set on the northern tip of the Jersey Shore, Highlands, New Jersey, offers unparalleled access to both the dynamic Atlantic Ocean and the sheltered waters of Sandy Hook Bay. This prime location, boasting the highest natural elevation from Maine to Mexico, provides stunning vistas of the New York City skyline and Sandy Hook National Park, setting the stage for diverse year-round fishing.

Anglers target migratory Striped Bass during peak spring and fall runs, while summer brings Flounder (Fluke), Bluefish, and Black Seabass to the inshore shallows. Offshore adventures chase trophy Tuna, Mahi Mahi, and Marlin in the deep Atlantic canyons. The region's rich maritime heritage and proximity to productive fishing grounds make it a top choice for both beginners and seasoned anglers.

Techniques vary from jigging and live-bait drifting in the bays to trolling and bottom fishing offshore. With tailored Highlands fishing charters available, every excursion promises scenic beauty and the thrill of landing Jersey Shore's iconic species, cementing this destination as a cornerstone of East Coast angling.

Highlands Fishing Seasons

January
While there may not be many boats on the water, you can still start the year with a bit of fishing, as the bay is full of delicious fish. Combine it with a trip to the historic town of Highlands and learn something new.
February
The season hasn’t quite got going yet, but there are still some fish to target in the Raritan Bay. Land something delicious to take back to shore, but don’t miss out on the award-winning restaurants while in town.
March
It’s finally time to get out on the water, as spring brings with it plenty of new opportunities. Head out to the Bay for the pick of the fishing, as Winter Fluke and Striped Bass start making an appearance.
April
Now that’s more like it! The bay fishing season really hits its stride in April as Flukes and Stripers fill the water, giving you the chance to put your angling skills to the test once more to fill the boat.
May
Bluefish and Seabass join the inshore party, giving you more bang for your buck inshore, while Bonito and Sharks start to come a little closer to the coast, giving you the chance to go beyond Sandy Hook.
June
It’s a question of where, not when, as June gives you the option of going offshore after some monster fish. Bluefin Tuna is the most common catch, with White Marlin creeping up behind, so get ready for a workout!
July
Offshore fishing reigns supreme in July again, as Marlin and Mahi Mahi are the name of the game. Make the most of the good weather and excellent fishing and spend over 10 hours on the water going after prized fish.
August
The beaches are crowded with people and the water with delicious fish. Hit the bay for Scup, Weakfish, Flounder, and Bluefish, or head offshore for Marlin, Sharks, and more, in the best month for fishing.
September
As summer vacation draws to a close, the fish are none the wiser. Get out on the water when it’s not as crowded and make the most of the incredible fishing, with plenty to choose from inshore and offshore.
October
With fall drawing in, it’s time to head back inshore. While the pelagics may be gone, there’s still plenty of Tautog, Flounder, Scup, Bluefish, Seabass, and Stripers to go after for a warming treat to take home.
November
You’ll sense the season coming to an end in Highlands in November. Fewer charters make their way to sea, but there’s still plenty of angling left. Go after monster Stripers and tasty Tautog and you won’t be disappointed.
December
Settle in for the holidays and enjoy Highlands’ other options for entertainment, as you pay a visit to the Victorian old town, the delicious seafood restaurants, all before getting ready for a new year of fishing.
