Fishing in Queens

Are you looking for an adventure in the Big Apple? Then you should definitely check out the Queens fishing scene. In a matter of minutes, you can go from big city to wilderness, and enjoy a day of casting for some of the prized fish that live in these waters. From Jamaica Bay to the vast Atlantic Ocean, everyone can find the experience they’re looking for!

There’s a wide variety of fish species that call these waters home. If you’re up for some Striped Bass fishing, there’s no better place than Jamaica Bay. Flounder, Black Drum, and Sharks are also in the cards. If you decide to head out into the open waters of the Atlantic, you’ll find incredible big game fishing opportunities. Tuna, Mahi Mahi, and even Marlin are all possible catches.

Depending on the type of adventure you want to have, you can book either a half day or a full day trip. If you’re staying closer to shore, or you’re looking for some family fun, a half day trip is a great option. However, if you want to visit the deep waters and look for some monster fish, consider booking a full day trip so you have enough time to find them.

Where do you find a fishing charter to take you out in Queens? That’s easy! Just head on down to Howard Beach and you’ll find them dotted all along the water, ready to take you out.

Rules & Regulations

Fishing licenses are usually included when heading out with a charter. If you’re fishing on your own, you’ll need to get a New York fishing license. There are strict regulations when it comes to certain species, so heading out with a reputable captain is the best way to make sure you’re fishing within the law.

Queens Fishing Seasons

January

If you don’t feel like fishing in the cold, you can head to the New York Boat Show and take a look at some of the most impressive vessels on the market. It’s been going on for over a century, and you’re sure to be dazzled!

February

Temperatures get pretty low during the winter, so most species escape to warmer climates. However, you can still go after Cod and have a blast reeling this feisty fish in.

March

With spring slowly approaching, it’s time for New York’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade! There’s a different parade going on underwater, however, with big Flounder coming to the city’s waters.

April

Cod, Flounder, and Striped Bass are all biting hot in April, so head out and try to reel in a big one. The Tribeca Film Festival is also taking place if you’re looking to unwind after a nice time on the water.

May

With temperatures slowly going up, you’ll find that the fish are starting to be more active. May marks peak Striper season. They get pretty big and they’re biting hard.

June

There’s a lot going on in the city at the beginning of summer, but there’s even more happening on the water. Head out to the waters of the Atlantic and hook into massive Tuna and Sharks!

July

The fishing season is in full swing, so take advantage of the nice weather and go reel in some prized specimens! Bluefish, Striped Bass, and Fluke are all biting closer to shore, with Tuna and Marlin looking for food offshore.

August

The weather is still great, and fishing is even better! Go after Bluefish and Striped Bass for a fun adventure, or head out to the deep waters to look for trophy Marlin and Tuna.

September

You’ll find that Bluefin and Yellowfin Tuna are biting offshore in September. However, Shark varieties and Blue Marlin are up for grabs too. Closer to shore, the Striper bite is hot.

October

Even as the temperatures slowly start to dwindle, you can still have a great time fishing. Tasty Tautog is biting like crazy, as well as prized Striped Bass and Bluefish.

November

Thanksgiving is knocking on our doors, and the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is in town. Have some fun and enjoy the festivities before heading out on the water for some Striper and Tautog fishing.

December

The holiday season is here, and New York is the place to be. It might be a little too cold to go fishing, but if you’re up for the challenge you’ll be rewarded with prized Tautog, Seabass, and Striper.
