Fishing in Lake Ontario - Canada

The smallest of the Great Lakes when it comes to surface area, Lake Ontario still provides some serious angling action. It’s known as the “Lake of Shining Wonders,” after all – and the fish lurking beneath its waters are pretty wondrous! Located on the USA-Canada border, the northern part of the lake lies entirely in the Great White North. If you’re looking to pick from a bounty of Lake Ontario fishing charters, Canada is the perfect starting point!

Lake Ontario is well-known for its “Salmon fever.” You’ll find Coho, Atlantic, and Pink varieties in these waters, but the real king here is the Chinook! Then there’s Trout, which are more than capable of holding their own. Brown, Lake, and Steelhead species inhabit these waters. Finally, you’ve got Walleye, and a whole host of Bass, including Largemouth and Smallmouth. Phew!

Charter captains located on the Canadian side of Lake Ontario run a wide variety of trips. If you’re new to fishing and feeling daunted by the sheer size of the lake, a half day adventure allows plenty of time to explore the hotspots and get your limit of fish. If you’re visiting in the summer, a longer trip means you’ll have time to get out to deeper, fish-filled waters. It also gives experienced anglers the chance to show off their skills!

Lake Ontario is bordered by some world-famous Canadian cities, so you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to picking a starting point. Toronto, Mississauga, and Hamilton are located on its western side, Kingston is on the east, and there’s a whole host of options in between, too.

Rules & Regulations

All anglers age 18 and over need to be in possession of a valid Ontario fishing license and Outdoors Card to explore Lake Ontario. These usually are not included in the price of a charter trip, so make sure you purchase one online beforehand.

Lake Ontario - Canada Fishing Seasons

January

Lake Ontario is very quiet during the winter months, but if you’re looking to start your year off in a different way, brace yourself for a blustery but exciting fishing trip! Trout and Walleye will be your targets.

February

Thanks to the weather, Lake Ontario remains relatively quiet during this month, with a few brave ice fishermen venturing out. The lake’s tributaries are full of Trout and Walleye.

March

Lake Ontario’s fishery really starts bustling in spring, so March heralds the unofficial start of the fishing season! Head to pockets of warm water and cast your line for some Brown Trout.

April

Brown Trout fishing remains strong, with huge varieties inhabiting the lake – we’re talking 20+ pounds! Coho, Chinook, and Steelhead varieties can also be found in these waters.

May

Head to the western part of the lake around Hamilton for your best bet at hooking Coho Salmon. Elsewhere in the lake, football-sized Brown Trout can be reeled in.

June

June heralds the start of summer, which means the fish start moving to the deeper, cooler parts of the lake. Steelhead and Coho Salmon are especially plentiful during this month.

July
The shoreline of Lake Ontario is bustling with Salmon and Trout species! Head to the western side of the lake for Steelhead, while the eastern side holds large numbers of Salmon and Brown Trout.

August

August means one thing for Lake Ontario – Lake Trout, and plenty of ‘em! They can be found all throughout this water, so just pick your departure point and get ready for a bonanza.

September

Autumn Salmon are filling up the lake’s waters during this month, with its tributaries being especially packed. Lake Trout, Chinook Salmon, and Steelhead are especially hot.

October

Trolling for Steelhead is a popular local pastime during this month – just pack your waterproof jacket, as rainy weather is common! You’ll also find a variety of Salmon and Trout on offer.

November

It’s all about Steelhead and Brown Trout during November! Wrap up warm, because winter is coming to the Great White North. You can also troll for Salmon species.

December
Treat yourself to the Christmas present of a lifetime by heading to Lake Ontario for a Steelhead bonanza! Grab your warmest winter clothes and get ready for the perfect winter adventure.
