Only one short ride away from central Auckland, Gulf Harbour is a proper fishing haven. New Zealand’s North Island needs no introduction, nor does the spectacular angling in its waters. If you’re looking to get a taster, there’s no better way than aboard your pick of Gulf Harbour fishing charters.

The vast and rich Hauraki Bay is teeming with an incredible number of fish species, and most of them are very fun to catch. Pink Snapper and Kingfish (Yellowtail Amberjack) are the most beloved and common catches in this area and they’re available year-round.

If you want to mix things up a bit, you can target Silver Trevally, John Dory, Gurnard, Hapuka, and Kahawai. A lot of people also come to these parts to go after the master of the offshore waters – Blue Marlin. What species you’ll go for depends solely on your fishing appetite.

Local skippers often organize multi-day expeditions, where you’ll spend several days on the boat chasing monster Kingfish and Snapper, as well as Blue Marlin in summer months. If you’d prefer to stay closer to shore, choose a half day or full day trip where you’ll go after small but colourful species in nearshore waters. These trips are not as fast-paced, making them perfect for family fishing.

Since the area is one of New Zealand’s biggest ports, finding a guide to take you out will be very easy. You can find local skippers near the Ferry Terminal, as well as at the Anchorage. With so many Gulf Harbour fishing charters to choose from, you simply can’t go wrong. And with a skilled skipper at your side, Hauraki Bay is your oyster!

January

It’s the middle of summer in New Zealand, which means that fishing is on fire just about anywhere you go! You can go after a slew of species in the nearshore waters or target Marlin offshore, whatever you fancy is game.

February

This is probably the best time to go after your own Grander Marlin! You’ll have to dedicate a whole day to chasing these monsters, but once you hook it, every minute of waiting will be worth it.

March

Summer fishing is still going strong, so hit the water and get your share of excellent action by going after Pink Snapper, Kingfish, and Trevally, just to name a few. Marlin are still out there, but further offshore.

April

The weather is slowly changing, but that’s not enough to dishearten avid anglers on the waters of the bay. There’s plenty of Gulf Harbour fishing charters going out, targeting anything from Hapuka and John Dory to Gurnard and Sharks.

May

It’s becoming colder and many anglers are making the most out of the remaining good fishing days. You can still go after a variety of species, including Snapper, Hapuka, John Dory, and many more.

June

The ocean in the winter isn’t very forgiving, but the gulf can still offer some decent action. Choose a good, calm day to head out and target Kingfish. They aren’t that common a catch in the winter, but you can hook a real lunker if luck is on your side.

July

Most anglers and skippers are taking a well-deserved rest over July and August. On some days, you can still go fishing for nearshore species like Tarakihi, Kahawai, and John Dory. From time to time, you might stumble upon a good-sized Kingfish.

August
Some charters offer special winter fishing trips, which are usually multi-day expeditions. During the day, you’ll go after an array of fish, including Hapuka, Trevally, and Snapper, and many more. Bear in mind that some of these come in impressive sizes.
September

If you’re looking for a change of pace, the Lobster season officially opens in August, so September is a great time to catch yourself a royal meal.

October

Fishing around Gulf Harbour and in Hauraki Bay is getting better and busier every day. Spring is a wonderful time to enjoy the weather, stunning vistas, and excellent fishing for Snapper, Gurnard, Trevally, John Dory, and of course, Kingfish.

November

Whether you’re going out to catch yourself a Lobster dinner or enjoy good fishing, November is a good month to do it all. If you’re not sure what to target, talk to your skipper, he’ll tell you what’s biting.

December

With spring right around the corner, the best of big game fishing can begin! Mahi Mahi, Kingfish, Snapper, and Marlin in rod-bending sizes are roaming the ocean waters and they’re hungry. Head out and fish on!

Group of 8 had a great day and caught plenty of fish which made for an enjoyable trip. Only things I would note is that if you opt for catering, it's very basic burgers and the listing says that the crew will clean and fillet the fish but they refused to do it for us on the day and said it was a mistake on the listing.
