Fishing in Charlotte Harbor

If you’re looking for quick access to some of the best fisheries in the country, minus the busyness, you’ll like fishing in Charlotte Harbor. This premier fishing spot, along with the Gulf Islands and Boca Grande Pass, makes up the second-largest estuary in Florida. Add to that the productive Peace River, and you’ve got the makings of a fishing haven.

One thing Charlotte Harbor is known for is its superb year-round inshore and backcountry action. All the staple fish of Southwest Florida abound here, from Redfish, Snook, and Spotted Seatrout to Cobia, Tarpon, Sheepshead, Snappers, and Mackerel. Inshore Grand Slams are an everyday occurrence in these waters and both local and visiting fishermen are in on the secret.

Anglers who have developed a taste for grander catches can focus their attention on Groupers and Sharks prowling around the estuary and they won’t be disappointed. The most desired catch is by far Tarpon. From April–October, the Boca Grande Pass is the ultimate hotspot to target these silvery giants, which can weigh up to a whopping 200 pounds!

There are countless fishing opportunities in Charlotte Harbor and there are just as many fishing charters available to take you to them. Local guides usually have a trip for just about any preference. From short runs to the backcountry waters and full day Tarpon expeditions in the Pass, to night fishing adventures and family-friend trips. All you have to do is take your pick!

Whether you hit the shallow grassy flats, the confluence of the Peace River, or the Gulf’s teeming reefs, fishing in Charlotte Harbor will wow you.

Rules & Regulations

One of the many perks that come with fishing aboard a charter is that you don’t have to worry about your fishing license. All necessary permits are included in the price of your trip. Brush up on your knowledge of current regulations and limits and fish on!

Charlotte Harbor Fishing Seasons

January

Charlotte Harbor is a great place to go when you’re craving some first-class winter fishing. The Trout bite is very good in January and Grouper species are active as well.

February

Snook are joining the fray, along with King Mackerel and Sharks. Head to the backwaters for a chance to hook Black Drum, Mangrove Snapper, Jack Crevalle, and Trout.

March

The spring marks the slow beginning of the high season, which means there are more fish, but also more anglers looking to catch them. Groupers are biting left and right, as well as Trout, Snook, and Cobia.

April

It’s the beginning of Tarpon season and that means a lot of fantastic fishing in and around Charlotte Harbor. You can also go after an Inshore Grand Slam – hook Redfish, Snook, and Trout and earn your bragging rights.

May

This is arguably the best time to fish for massive Tarpon! Boca Grande boasts the title of “the Tarpon capital of the world” and if you come here in May, you’ll understand that the name is completely justified.

June

Snapper, Grouper, and Cobia around the reefs, Redfish, Snook, and Trout in the inshore realm, all are there for the taking in June! This is also the month of the World’s Richest Tarpon Tournament, aka a Tarpon catch and release extravaganza as far as the eye can see.

July

Come to the water and fill your cooler with the delicious fish that are out and about this month. Snapper, Trout, Redfish, and Sheepshead are all on the menu. In the mood for sportfishing? Tarpon is still out there, ready to impress you with its strength, size, and acrobatics.

August

It’s hot in Charlotte Harbor and the humidity can be overwhelming, but a successful day on the water is enough to forget about all that. Snook are a popular catch in August, just remember they’re still strictly catch and release.

September

Redfish love late summer weather, and you’ll find them in big numbers on the flats. This is a great time to target supreme fighters like Cobia and Goliath Grouper, as well as Sharks and Snappers.

October

Colder weather is a cue for Tarpon to move on from Boca Grande and Charlotte Harbor, but don’t worry, there’s still plenty of fish to catch. King Mackerel are ready to attack your setup with abandon, and let’s not forget about Black Drum and Redfish, among many others.

November

The weather can be quite “moody” in November, so it’s a good idea to bring rain gear to your fishing trip. Sharks aren’t bothered by the changing weather, and neither are Jack Crevalle, Redfish, Mangrove Snapper, and other inshore favorites.

December

Reserve a day or two before the holidays to relax and enjoy the excellent action that fishing in Charlotte Harbor has to offer. What better way to celebrate the passing of another year than by reeling in great fish on a crisp winter day?
