Fishing in DFW

Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) offers exceptional freshwater fishing adventures right at the doorstep of one of Texas' largest metropolitan areas. Surrounded by a network of picturesque lakes like Lewisville, Grapevine, Eagle Mountain, and Benbrook, anglers enjoy convenient access to diverse habitats within a 30-mile radius. These waters teem with prized species including trophy Largemouth Bass, feisty White Bass, hard-fighting Hybrid Stripers, and abundant Crappie. Catfish enthusiasts particularly thrive here, with lakes yielding heavyweight Blue Cats exceeding 100 pounds, aggressive Flatheads, and prolific Channel Cats.

Guided trips typically span 4–8 hours, allowing ample time to explore submerged structures, river channels, and lighted docks where predators gather. Whether you prefer light tackle, fly fishing, or bowfishing after dark, local experts tailor techniques to seasonal patterns and target species. Family-friendly charters provide all necessary equipment—just secure a Texas fishing license for participants over 17. Year-round opportunities mean no off-season; every visit promises action, from spring White Bass runs to summer Catfish jug-lining and autumn Bass blitzes.

The region's lakes—such as sprawling Lake Worth and scenic Joe Pool Lake—feature varied terrains from stump fields to deep tailraces, ensuring dynamic experiences for novice anglers and seasoned trophy hunters alike. With minimal travel time from DFW's urban core, these fisheries deliver a perfect blend of convenience and wilderness immersion, making every trip both productive and unforgettable.

DFW Fishing Seasons

January
Calm January days are perfect to go after Crappie, which bites pretty aggressively this time of year.

February
If you’re going after Catfish in February, you’re bound to have a great trip. You can target them at Lake Ray Roberts or Lewisville Lake.

March
Catfishing is still great and Striper joins the hunt! Lake Grapevine has a healthy population of both, so get your next catch there.

April
Lake Lewisville holds excellent numbers of Hybrid Striped Bass. The action is especially great in April, so don’t miss out.

May
Crappie are far into their spawning season and you can easily find them in shallow water, especially around the underwater brush.

June
Hybrid Bass and Striper are forming schools this time of year. As the temperature gets higher, you can expect excellent topwater action.

July
Channel Catfish, Striper, and Hybrid Bass are great targets in July, as they move around in schools. You’ll also find Crappie around the brush piles.

August
Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass are present in high numbers and you can’t go wrong going after them, especially if you’re at Lake Whitney.

September
Bass fishing is amazing no matter which lake or type of Bass you choose! To make your trip more challenging, try catching one on a fly.

October
Crappie fishing should not be missed! There’s lots of them, they’re fun to catch, and most importantly, they’re as tasty as can be!

November
Catfish start to feed very aggressively as the temperature goes down, so this is definitely the time to go after them!

December
Go after Crappie and have an epic meal afterward or go after big Catfish for some bicep flexing. Either way, you’ll have a great time!
