Fishing in Lake Conroe

Considered by many to be the gem of Montgomery County, Lake Conroe is truly a sight to behold. It's the perfect destination to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the outdoors. It's also a fantastic place for an angling adventure, especially if you hook up with one of the many experienced Lake Conroe fishing guides.

There are various species of fish inhabiting this bountiful lake. Among these, the ones anglers seek out the most are Bass and Catfish. Bass fishing addicts will be happy to know that Lake Conroe holds Largemouth Bass, as well as White and Hybrid Striped Bass in good numbers. In fact, the Bass action here is so good that the lake serves as a venue for several tournaments each year!

Catfish, however, are the most abundant species in Lake Conroe, making them a prime target for anglers looking to return home with a few dinners in tow. Both Channel and Blue Catfish call these waters their home, although you'll see the Channel variety more often. Crappie, Bluegill, and a few other types of Sunfish can also be found in these waters, making Lake Conroe a year-round fishery.

During spring and late fall, you'll be able to catch fish fairly close to shore. Once summer hits, fish tend to move to deeper waters, necessitating a boat. You'll find guides in places such as Lakeview Marina and other boat access points scattered along Lake Conroe's shores.

Rules & Regulations

To fish on Lake Conroe, you'll need a Texas fishing license with a freshwater stamp. This applies to most anglers aged 17 and older, though there are some exceptions. It's also a good idea to get familiar with fish regulations before you hit the waters, as all fish except for Sunfish are subject to size and bag limits.

Lake Conroe Fishing Seasons

January

The beginning of the year is a great time to get in on the Hybrid Bass action. You'll find them along different underwater ledges, often chasing after schools of shad. Other types of Bass will also be lurking around different cover close to shore.

February

The waters are still fairly cold during February, meaning you can find fish in fairly shallow waters. If you're looking for Catfish, try exploring river channels and creeks and you might just hook into a big one.

March

At this time of year, the lake will finally start to warm up. This means that Bass will start spawning. You'll see Largemouth Bass and Crappie around the same type of cover as they'll both be looking for the warmest waters around.

April

Once Black Bass have finished spawning, you can switch your focus to different humps, wood, and brush pilings. Exploring these will net you White and Hybrid Bass, as well as Crappie. Small Catfish are also a frequent sight in April.

May

May brings some of the hottest White and Hybrid action on Lake Conroe. Troll for them around humps or along the bottom. Alternatively, head out early in the morning and try your luck for some Largemouth Bass.

June

The early morning bite is typically the most productive at this time of the year. Especially if you're looking to catch Catfish or Largemouth Bass. June is also a great time to fish for Hybrid and White Bass.

July

By now, the water is at its warmest and most fish will be hanging out in deeper spots. So hop on a boat and make the most out of your summer day. If you want to fish from shore, you'll have to get to the lake early.

August

You can expect similar water conditions as in July. As the waters are warm, fish will often lurk in deeper waters, making it a bit more tricky to find them. However, it's still a great time to fish for Catfish.

September

With the waters cooling down, you'll once again get to enjoy some nice Largemouth Bass angling. You can also expect the Crappie fishing to slowly pick up as the waters continue to cool down.

October

October is a fantastic time to fish on Lake Conroe. Besides the amazing Catfish action, you'll get to reel in Largemouth, White, and Hybrid Striped Bass. If you hit the brush pilings, you'll also get to reel in Crappie and Bluegill.

November

The waters have finally cooled down, making Largemouth Bass stick to cover and Crappie to brush pilings. Since they'll be fairly easy to find, you'll just have to focus your efforts on making them bite.

December

December brings the similar type of action as November does. By now, the waters are cold enough so you don't need to head out early. Fishing will still be great even if you sleep in, and you'll get to avoid the freezing mornings.
