If you’re looking for an unbeatable freshwater angling adventure in the Sunshine State, what could be better than casting a line in its largest lake? Join one of the many fishing guides on Lake Okeechobee, and you’ll get to explore “Florida’s Inland Sea” for some unforgettable species. Covering over 450,000 acres, these shallow waters are just waiting for you to come and discover what lies beneath!

There’s one species that stands above the rest in Lake Okeechobee – Largemouth Bass. Not only is this hard-fighter the most popular freshwater game fish around, it’s also Florida’s state fish. Newer anglers can target smaller varieties of this species, usually around 3 pounds, in the summertime by spinning and using light tackle. Want more of a battle on your hands? Face huge 10 pounders in winter on the fly!

It’s not just about Bass, though. You’ll also find popular Panfish such as Crappie and Bluegill thriving in these waters. They’re the perfect species to target if you’re looking for something tasty. Want to introduce your little ones to angling? These Panfish are also a great “beginner” target, with spring being the best time to cast your line for them.

Fishing guides on Lake Okeechobee run a whole host of trips. Newbies can learn the ropes on a four-hour excursion, whereas experienced anglers can opt for a full day of fishing. The majority of charters launch out of Clewiston in the south, or Okeechobee in the north. Head to either of these locations and you’re bound to find the trip of your dreams!

Rules & Regulations

As is the case throughout Florida, you’ll need a valid freshwater fishing license to cast a line here. These aren’t provided by fishing guides, so make sure you purchase one before departing on your trip.

January
Fishing Lake Okeechobee in January is about as good as it gets! The Bass spawning season has just kicked off, drawing casual anglers and FLW tournament fishers to its vast, shallow waters.
February
Largemouth Bass spawning season is in full swing, and the lake is covered in small Bass boats looking for that trophy fish. Climb aboard or fish from shore at spots like the East Wall.
March

There’s no end to what you can catch fishing Lake Okeechobee in March. Bass and Crappie are on fire this time of year, and the Bluegill and Sunfish are coming into season, too!

April

April is traditionally the last big push of the trophy Bass season. Head out and bag that dream ten-pounder before the big fish disappear. Hit the canals for some Crappie while you’re at it!

May

As the spring sun warms the waters, the biggest Bass move to deeper and more remote waters in an attempt to beat the heat. You can still find some monsters this time of year, though!

June

Trophy Largemouth season is over on all but the coolest years. Bluegill and Sunfish are still around in the canals, and you always find smaller Bass further from the shore.

July

The Okeechobee Cattlemen’s Ranch Rodeo offers great Southern fun that’s perfect for the whole family. This action-packed event sees cowboys and cowgirls don their hats and take on bulls and broncos.

August

The summer heat makes getting out on the lake almost unbearable unless you’re up early or out late. You can find plenty of two or three-pounder Bass if you can take the temperatures, though.

September

Spend the day hunting Bass in the depths of the lake, or try out a range of other water sports like water skiing or wakeboarding. If you’re swimming in the lake, keep an eye out for gators!

October

Summer is long gone, but the heat shows no sign of dropping off! Hit fall hotspots like the Shoal or Coots Bay if you’re on the hunt for Bass, or just head out for a boat tour of the area.

November

Lake Okeechobee fishing guides head back onto the water in force as Bass creep into the shallows. Spawning hasn’t started yet, but you can catch a monster before the season even begins!

December

If all you want for Christmas is a rod in your hands and a lake full of big Bass and Speckled Perch, head to Lake Okeechobee and get fishing. You’re guaranteed to avoid a white Christmas here!

A cold front had just gone through so the fish werenโ€™t biting. I would recommend planning a trip from the middle of March through May, if possible.

Donโ€™t expect to go fully into Lake Okeechobee, as water levels run low in May, making it so youโ€™re forced to fish the islands and canals on the perimeter of the lake. While you may not catch trophy fish, the bite is still extremely hot and you will put plenty of good fighting and good sized fish in the boat.

Talk to the operators of Slims Fish Camp. They are very knowledgeable and friendly. Great fresh bait and ready to serve you and offer advice. If you are going for the first time , it would be advisable to have a guide as the reeds and catlails could easily get you turned around. Our guide Captain William was fantastic.

Good trip, was a nice day but wind picked up after 2 hrs. Fished with wild shiners and Captian William put us on some fish early on, decent size 1.5 - 3.0 Largemouth for a few hrs. we then made some moves to an inner location to get out of the direct wind and there were some bigger fish in that location that we stalked for some time, but unable to land those giants. More than likely 5-7 lb range. So overall a good day and enjoable expereince.

My son an I had a great fishing day with Captain William Wood. We caught 3 nice bass but had we landed every fish we hooked we would have caught as many as 8 - 10 bass. Captain William was knowledgeable with what bait to use and where to go on the lake. We paid for a 1/2 day trip and Captain William worked really hard at the end of our trip to make sure my son caught a bass before our time ended. I would book another trip with Captain Wood.

Very knowledgeable on bass fishing. Gave lots of helpful tips I can use and take back home. Being new to large mouth bass fishing Iโ€™ll take all the advice I can get. Fishing was so so but all the boats around us were not doing any better. Kept moving and trying different things, got on to some fish and landed a few but lost more than we put in the boat. Even caught my first on top water. Had a blast on my first fresh water fishing trip in Florida

Early start, stunning sunrise and surroundings and a very different vibe. Flats fishing like Belize but with large mouth bass as the prize rather than bonefish. Really a โ€˜cents on the dollarโ€™ flats fishing experience. Itโ€™s also nice to be in the best boat on the water with the most experienced guide and excellent weather. Me and my best mate did this together and Iโ€™m bringing my wife back to enjoy the same!
