Fishing in New South Wales

While the whole Australian continent is home to excellent fishing opportunities, New South Wales is probably the most popular haunt of passionate anglers. It’s no secret that deep sea fishing here is superb, and the freshwater action follows close behind. That’s why NSW fishing guides are at your service every day of the year – there’s always something to target.

What makes the offshore bite so special is the abundance of the most sought-after game fish – Marlin. Come summer, Striped, Blue and Black Marlin swarm the bluewater and it’s a sight to behold. You’ll have to travel 15–20 miles to get to the fishing grounds, but there you can also hook into Mahi Mahi, Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, Kingfish and even mighty Swordfish.

Things are just as interesting on the reefs and inshore, where you can find anything from Flathead and Bream to Pink Snapper and Barracuda on your line. In the freshwater realm, you’ll enjoy excellent Trout action in the mountain streams and rivers.

When it comes to the types of trips you can book with NSW guides, the sky’s the limit. If there’s a particular species you’d like to target, skippers often offer specialized excursions. Full day expeditions are recommended for big game chasers, while shorter options are better suited for family outings that will put you on a variety of delicious reef fish.

You’ll find fishing charters in any big city in New South Wales, including Sydney, Port Stephens and Bermagui. All you need to do is pick a destination and reserve your spot in advance to avoid the summer rush.

Rules & Regulations

If you’re hitting the water with a fishing guide, you don’t have to worry about fishing licences – they’re included in the price of the trip. Solo anglers will need to get all the appropriate permits and carry them while they fish.

New South Wales Fishing Seasons

January

The beginning of the year marks the beginning of the high season. NSW fishing guides can take you out and have you fishing for Blue and Striped Marlin, as well as a variety of reef fish like Hapuka, Trevally and Kingfish.

February

This is one of the best fishing months in the state. Just about everything is biting in February, but Marlin are the ones that steal the spotlight. Freshwater enthusiasts will enjoy prime Trout bite wherever they go.

March

Tuna? Grander Blue Marlin? Striped Marlin? Hapuka? Trevally? They’re all on the cards this month and both locals and visiting fishermen know it. All you need is a booked charter trip, a good mood and the fishing battles can begin!

April

With autumn around the corner, Yellowfin Tuna take the stage both when it comes to the number and the size of the fish. There’s still plenty of Striped Marlin around, and Swordfishing is at its best in April.

May

Things are slowing down in the offshore waters of New South Wales but there’s still plenty to do. Delicious Kingfish are the most common catch, and game fish aficionados can enjoy a premier Tuna or Swordfish hunt.

June

The weather is getting chilly and unpredictable, not to mention the waves and fishing conditions in the bluewater. Worry not, because there’s some good Pink Snapper to be had around the reefs, while Swordfish are still roaming around.

July

This is the coldest month of the year, so fishing isn’t as productive. On a good day, you can still hook into solid Pink Snapper, Hapuka, as well as Bluefin and Bigeye Trevally. Trout fishing is put on hold in the winter.

August

It can still get quite cold and windy on the water, so if you do head out, make sure you’re staying safe. Strong reef fishing action will make up for your troubles with good numbers of Hapuka, Trevally and Snapper.

September

Fishing restrictions are enforced in September, so targeting Kingfish, Tuna and Swordfish is not allowed. The same goes for Trout fishing, which will open up in October, but until then, you can cast a line in saltwater and go after Hapuka and Trevally.

October

Join in the “Gone Fishing Day” across NSW in October. There are lessons and competitions throughout the day and you won’t need a fishing licence to participate or fish. The Trout bite is back on – top-notch Rainbows, Brookies and Browns are on the menu.

November

With spring in full swing, a lot of freshwater anglers head inland to the numerous streams and rivers where beautiful Trout await. Rainbows and Browns are particularly hungry in November. In the saltwater realm, it’s a good time for Snapper and Hapuka.

December

The end of the year marks the return of the majestic Marlin and it’s not a moment too soon! NSW fishing guides organize both saltwater adventures and freshwater Trout bonanzas. All you have to do is pick which one you want to do first.
