Fishing in Baja California

A Baja California fishing adventure knows no limits. From the range of bays nearshore, to the deep waters of the Pacific, all the way round to the unusually warm waters of the Sea of Cortez, there’s no end to what you can get up to here. With warm weather year-round, you can come whenever you want and get your hands on some of the world’s most sought-after fish.

Speaking of the fish, what you’ll catch depends on where you go. The bays are full of Snappers, Groupers, Jacks, Mackerel, Seabass, and the exotic Roosterfish. Meanwhile, the Sea of Cortez is a haven for Yellowfin Tuna and Mahi Mahi. Sailfish come right up close to shore, while Striped, Black, and Blue Marlin are available offshore, alongside swarms of Yellowtails, Wahoo, and more.

With so many fish available, you can get your fill on a trip as short as a half day in the bays and the Sea of Cortez. If you fancy an offshore adventure into the Pacific, you’ll want to spend at least a full day, with extended full trips on offer for the pros, too.

Wherever you are in Baja California, you’re not far from a fishing charter. Hop over from SoCal and travel out of Ensenada, or hit the Bahia Tortugas or San Carlos further down the Pacific Coast. Los Cabos and its resort towns in the south are a hotspot for tourists, while every town and village up the Cortez coastline has something for you.

Rules & Regulations

Many fishing charters in Baja California will include your license as part of the package, but it’s always worth checking with your captain before you head out. They’ll also know all there is about bag and size limits, so you know that you’re fishing within the law.

Baja California Fishing Seasons

January

Start the year with a splash and come to the sunny shores of Baja California for a nearshore fishing adventure. Yellowtails and Mackerel will provide plenty of light tackle entertainment, along with a delicious dinner.

February

With the holiday fever well and truly over, a vacation surely beckons. Why not head to Mexico, where you can escape the winter blues and get your hands on a range of delicious fish in the shallow bays?

March

There’s still some time to go before the fishing season hits its stride in Baja California, but you can definitely get some early practice come March. Test your bottom fishing skills on the reefs to land some exotic fish.

April

You’ll really feel things starting to heat up in April, as monstrous Striped Marlin start making their way along the Pacific coast and Seabass return to the nearshore waters. Wherever you head, there’s something going on!

May

The whole peninsula comes alive with avid anglers scrambling to get on a fishing charter. Big game fish start coming nearer to shore and even to the Sea of Cortez, giving you a wider range of fish to target.

June

As you reach peak season, it’s difficult to decide where to go on your Baja California fishing adventure. Exotic Roosterfish are aplenty nearshore, with the big game trophies starting to congregate offshore.

July

There’s no doubt that offshore fishing reigns supreme come the height of summer. Blue and Black Marlin join their Striped cousins, along with Sailfish and Albacore to give you the fishing trip of a lifetime.

August

Yellowfin Tuna join the offshore party, even making their way around the peninsula and into the Sea of Cortez. Follow these monstrous, delicious creatures and get your fill of meat to take back to shore.

September

While the kids may be back in school, there’s no sign of things calming down in Baja California. In fact, the fishing has never been hotter, as the offshore beasts and nearshore beauties fill the waters for your enjoyment.

October

Make the most of the last of the deep water fishing opportunities, before the pelagics make their way out of the Sea of Cortez and away from Baja California for winter. Don’t miss out on Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna, and more.

November

There’s only one star offshore if you’re looking for a deep sea fishing adventure. If Wahoo’s not your thing, then fear not, as plenty of exciting smaller fish pack the shallow waters nearshore to keep you entertained.

December

What better way to see out the year than with a vacation to the warm seas? Come to Baja California in December and get your hands on Jack Crevalle, Mackerel, and many more prized inshore creatures.
