The St Johns River begins as a freshwater fishery, before transforming into brackish waters as it makes its way towards the Atlantic. The upper and middle parts of the river contain a whole host of Largemouth Bass, and this is why it’s known as “a Bass-fishing paradise”! You’ll engage in some rod-bending action as you battle this world-famous game fish, beloved the world over for its hard-fighting skills and boundless energy.
There’s also plenty of action when it comes to the energetic Striped Bass. In the river’s lower waters, you can test your skills against this feisty fish, and even take your catch home for some tasty table fare. The river is also home to the aggressive Hybrid Striped (or Sunshine) Bass. This fish has two of the best Bass qualities around – plenty of speed and fighting spirit!
Local fishing guides offer species-specific trips that run in four, six, and eight-hour chunks. For Largemouth Bass, head to Cocoa, Melbourne, and even Orlando to hit up the most plentiful river spots. Meanwhile, Lakes Poinsett, Monroe, and Harney are especially productive for both Largemouth and Sunshine Bass. More of a Striper chaser? Then your starting point has to be Jacksonville, perfectly perched along the river’s most brackish waters.

Bottom fishing was excellent with non-stop action. We caught tons of red snapper, lots of Black Sea bass, several triggerfish, a few vermillion snapper, a Cobia, and a handful of other species. Donโt expect any trophy fish but do expect to get worn out from catching fish all day and make sure to plan out a dinner with your fresh catch!
