  • Food Value Excellent

  • Habitats River, Lake

(Pomoxis annularis / nigromaculatus)

Fishing the second-biggest natural lake in the US is a joy to behold. At one with nature on the open water, you’ll search for delicious Crappie to fill the freezer. Known in Florida as “Speckled Perch,” these much-loved Panfish are a staple of every fisherman’s diet. Come Lake Okeechobee Crappie fishing and fill the boat with plenty of “Specks” like a true local.

What to Expect

The underrated Crappie gets far too little attention for its incredible value in taste and in game quality. Often overlooked in favor of Bass, the Crappie’s sheer number in this lake provides for a thrilling adventure.

Spend a half day, 3/4 of a day, or a full day with a Crappie fishing guide in Lake Okeechobee and see for yourself. Beginners are sure to land their first catch against this light creature, while avid anglers will get more bang for their buck than with any other fish.

You’ll fish from a purpose-built bass boat. Suitable to navigate the shallow waters of the lake, she’ll also speed off to the sweet spots in no time. Troll to entice the bite of the Crappies and Bass, or jig around any structures with live bait or minnows for the best results.

Crappie fishing in Lake Okeechobee peaks in the first few months of the year. They spawn in colder water, giving you the chance to reel in plenty of fish. During summer, Bass reigns supreme but, if you play your cards right, you’ll also go after the delicious “Specks.”

How to Prepare

Your captain will set you up with all the fishing equipment you need for a productive day out. All you need to do before hopping aboard is grab your Florida freshwater fishing license. Find out how with our short guide.

Other than that, just make sure to bring some drinks and snacks aboard and make the most of your day out. You’ll be blown away by the incredible fishing on offer with a Lake Okeechobee Crappie fishing guide.

Sunscreen and wind protection. It was warm and windy for sure. But, on the upside, no bugs !

A cold front had just gone through so the fish weren’t biting. I would recommend planning a trip from the middle of March through May, if possible.

Plan for any type of weather, it was very nice day but then out of no where it rained hard for about 10 minutes, and got windy, but then it was nice again.

Don’t expect to go fully into Lake Okeechobee, as water levels run low in May, making it so you’re forced to fish the islands and canals on the perimeter of the lake. While you may not catch trophy fish, the bite is still extremely hot and you will put plenty of good fighting and good sized fish in the boat.

Talk to the operators of Slims Fish Camp. They are very knowledgeable and friendly. Great fresh bait and ready to serve you and offer advice. If you are going for the first time , it would be advisable to have a guide as the reeds and catlails could easily get you turned around. Our guide Captain William was fantastic.
