Where to catch Mahi in Mooloolaba

There are several pinpoints you want to visit. The reefs out of Mooloolaba lie scattered around the Coral Sea. It’s best to get a full day trip so that you have more time for fishing.

The go-to place for Mahi is the North Reef. It’s found some 45 kilometers from Mooloolaba. Summer months see schools of Mahi, some big ones in particular. The area also fishes well for Mackerel (‘Macks’), with Spotty and Spanish Mackerel being the most common catch.

Mahi are on the chew around the reefy patch called Caloundra. It lies about 25 kilometers from the coast, with waters up to 50 meters deep. The area produces high numbers of Mahi, and as you go trolling for them, you might get the likes of Wahoo and Mackerel.

Reefs 4 and 5 of the Caloundra are other locations with a promise of excellent Mahi fishing. Trolling these waters will also get you other fish - when you reach the limits of Mahi (the possession limit is five) - you can drop the bait and get other tasty reef species.

Leach Shoal is another place to check out on your Mahi Mooloolaba quest. It lies eight kilometers from the coastline, and the terrain’s a bit different - the water’s only 15 metres deep.

How to get Mahi?

Mahi are hard hitting and travel at a speed of up to 95 kmh (60 mph). This means if you want to go trolling for them, you need to be fast with if you want to subdue them. Mahis move around top waters and feed on flying fish, squid, crabs, and mackerel. They are found swimming around the edges of reefs where waters are about 40 meters (130 ft) deep. Fishermen look for birds, floating debris, or buoys.

How season anglers catch Mahi is that they use 15 to 20 kg (30 to 50 pound) gear when trolling for them. They hook live bait to their outriggers and make the bait jump and dive alternately near the surface. That way, they imitate flying fish and Mahi can’t say no to them.

Another way to get Mahi into a feeding frenzy is to toss some live chum (read ballyhoos) into the water and try some fly fishing. Throw the fly in the direction of the feeding Mahi. You will soon see how fast and acrobatic they can be.
