Sturgeon Fishing in Willamette River

This famous Oregon fishery is often considered to be one of the best Sturgeon fishing spots on the West Coast. Whether you’re a lifelong angler who’s always wanted to target this brag worthy fish, or are a new fisherman who wants to go big or go home, a Willamette River Sturgeon fishing adventure has plenty to offer.

These waters are populated by Sturgeon year-round, but the best time to target them is between May and December, when they move down from the Columbia River. They can be found throughout the Willamette River, but are especially attracted to murky waters, such as the 26-mile stretch between Portland and Willamette Falls. Depending on your previous angling experience, you’ll try out a variety of techniques to battle them, including bottom fishing, which is great for newbies and experienced anglers alike.

Although some brave anglers like to take their chances against these hard-fighting, huge fish from the banks of the river, the most popular way to pursue them ison a charter boat. Fishing alongside a local guide means you’ll be treated to a wealth of experience and knowledge that’ll get you to the Sturgeon hotspots in no time. It’s common for trips to last anywhere from 4–8 hours, so you just need to choose what suits you best.

Sturgeon are generally limited to catch and release throughout the river, so make sure you bring along a camera – your Willamette River Sturgeon fishing adventure will leave you with plenty of memories you’ll want to document!

Although Sturgeon are generally limited to catch and release, there is usually an open “catch and keep” period during February, but it’s rare to find guides who partake in this – the majority are focused on Sturgeon conservation. If you fish with a guide, you’ll be provided with top-quality equipment, so you’ll just need to bring along an Oregon fishing license.

Excellent fishing trip

Jason takes his job very seriously. Works hard to find and keep you on fish. Jason is pleasant, patient, professional and accommodating. He is extremely safety conscious. Jason provided quality equipment and keeps a neat and tidy boat. My wife and I had such a great time that we booked a second day.

Jason is Awesome!
5/5
Jason was the best guide we have ever went out with. He is a genuine nice guy who knows his fishing. He is experienced, organized, prepared and knows how to catch fish. He went out of his way to let us catch crabs -which was so much fun- best time of the trip for me- my husband liked it too. I want to take my daughters back with the grandkids and just go crabbing- can't say how incredible the trip was. Thanks for the great memories.
