My party that was scheduled for Sunday May 21, 2023 had to reschedule so with the beautiful weather I thought I should still get out and wet a line myself! I launched at Assateague and started at the Verazanno Bridge. I was able to catch a few short rock fish and about a dozen bluefish. I started catching some cownose rays and nothing else so I decided to head up to the thoroughfare and see how crowded it was. I was shocked to only see a few boats fishing for flounder there. With the outgoing tide and the NW wind, it was set up perfect to drift for flounder. I caught a total of 13 flounder with the one in the picture being the last one that I caught before heading home. It was unfortunate that my party missed out on the beautiful day of fishing but I certainly didn't want to miss it!

To get ready for sea bass season, which starts Monday May 15th, Captain Justin Marshall, myself, and 2 other anglers went out to the wrecks to try our luck and make sure the fish were there in good numbers before taking our clients out there next week. As it would turn out, my arms are sore just trying to type this report! We caught well over 200 fish in the 4 hours that we were out there... what a workout! We also pulled in a few Tautog too. Needless to say, we feel confident that next week's parties will have some good fishing. We fished the outgoing tide and caught a quite a few rockfish but all were undersized. Water temps were 59 degrees and with poor water clarity. My party was having a hard time accurately casting due to the 20mph winds with 30mph gusts but when they hit the right spot it was FISH ON! There are plenty of keeper sized Rockfish around but the only one they hooked came unbuttoned at the boat.

Water was a little chilly this morning, 57-58 degrees. Was able to catch a good number of flounder but all were undersized. Once the water temp gets up above 60 degrees and the water clarity improves, the flounder bite will be much better. I expect within the next 7-10 days to see consistent keeper size flounder being caught!

Rockfish Bite is Picking Up!

It's was a bit too windy to go offshore today so we ended up rescheduling our trip. Instead we hung around the inlet chasing blues and rockfish. We did catch a few blues, lost about 20 tails off of our soft baits but landed some nice Rockfish in the process! The rockfishing is certainly getting better and as the wind and rain starts to die down, the water temps will increase and the clarity will improve... which means better fishing! Feel free to book a back bay trip with us in pursuit of Rockfish, flounder, and bluefish!
