A Week of Ups and Downs

An interesting week. We tried around Motiti midweek and did well, with mainly tarakihi. Friday night/Saturday we overnighted at Mayor, had steady fishing and a good variety of species, including snapper, tarakihi, maomao, and trevally. It was a windy trip home, but pretty much on the nose, so comfortable enough. Sunday, a good forecast so we headed back to Motiti only for the weather to change completely for the worse, forcing us to the Eastern side where it was calm, but not much fish, a few snapper and a couple of tarakihi. Things eased a bit so we worked the middle ground which was pretty much a non event, a couple of big blue cod and snapper. An excellent crew enjoyed the day regardless, but a tough one. Monday we headed out to Mayor, the predicted rain didn’t show as Coromandel stopped most of it. We did get some on the way home, but the fishing was good despite a lot of current so a big improvement on the Sunday.

We had a bad day weather wise, the gear was a bit run down, and I knew before hand about taking your own fish home BUT in the event after spending $150 and 10 hours catching no fish it was disappointing some fisherman took heaps home while others got nothing

Yes, disappointing Craig. Possibly the people catching more were putting in more effort, were more skilled, had more experience, were listening to the advice being given by the skipper and deckhand, or maybe they were just luckier on the day. Blaming the gear’s a bit sad though, if there was a problem with it, there were plenty of other rods you could have used and all bar 2 of the people on the boat were using the exact same gear as you.

If catching a good feed is your thing this is the boat unafraid to change boat position multiple times to ensure a good catch for all extremely helpful with sorting tangles (which are going to happen when fishing at depths) even offer a filleting service at a fair price . Knows what he what’s to achieve and goes about his job effectively and in a friendly manner
