Techniques
Fishing at Murchison Falls on the Nile involves various effective methods and equipment for different fish types. Live bait and casting lures work well for Nile perch, catfish, and smaller species like tiger fish obtained through spinning. The falls are located in Uganda's biggest nature reserve, the Murchison Falls National Park. Trolling is better suited for Lake Victoria, Africa's largest fresh water body. Species commonly targeted here include the Nile perch, tilapia, and catfish. But Uganda has about 350 fish species and you may just get something else on the line. For an optimal fishing setup, use an 8 to 11 feet rod with a fixed spool or multiplier reel. When targeting smaller species, a 7-foot spinning rod with a 5 kg (10lb) line is sufficient. Reel selection depends on the fish type. A fixed spool or multiplier reel with 30-35 lb line is suitable for Nile perch and catfish. For tiger fish and smaller species, choose a reel allowing comfortable casting of small spinners. Limited basic equipment is included in the provided prices, more suitable for first-time visitors. Anglers, especially seasoned ones, are strongly advised to bring their own equipment due to challenges in equipment breakages and supply in Uganda. Uganda Fishing Season The Nile River and Lake Victoria are arguably the two best sport fishing destinations in Uganda. Generally, the drier months—December to March and June to October—are more favorable producing better results. While fishing is year-round, these months have less rain, reducing interruptions. Avoid April/May in the rainy season.
