I am a 3rd generation fisherman here in Fort Lauderdale. My dad is a fisherman, so I grew up in the charter fishing business... in fact, my parents actually met at the dock where I still work today. I fished alongside my father throughout my high school years, as a deckhand on fishing charters as well as fishing the Bahamas Billfish Champion Circuit every year. I got my captain's license the first month I turned 18 years old and have been fishing full time ever since.
Techniques
We drift fish on the reefs during the day, bottom fishing with chunks of squid, ballyhoo and sardines. We fish mainly for snappers, groupers and the whole array of small bottom fish that are good eating. On the day trips, you can also jig (no braided line allowed aboard) or you can flat-line. The mate will rig you up however you ask him to.

It looks like the mangrove snappers are spawning off the coast of Fort Lauderdale this week. Last night we caught over 100 mangrove snappers, plus some other snapper species mixed in. The mangrove snappers bite this good when they are doing their annual spawn. They spawn on the full moons of the summer but it usually doesn't get this good until we get into August and September. This year, it seems they showed up a little early. I love it! The next few days are going to be good night fishing and then we should get a few more runs of them over the course of the next few full moons. Good luck to everyone fishing with us. Great Snapper Fishing On Our Party Boat

We're getting into the snappers really good this month. Tons of yelloweye snappers, which I haven't seen hardly any of in the past few years are biting. It's a great sign of improving snapper fishing and I love it because they are so good eating. Plenty of other bottom fish species such as grouper, grunts, porgies and triggerfish are biting. Some throw backs but a lot of keepers too. We've also managed to catch a few really nice cobia this week. Cobia are an elusive fish that we catch on the reef and they get big. They tend to follow sea turtles, big sharks, whales and other big creatures. They are great eating and they are always a crowd pleaser because they are so strong and fight so well. Other bigger fish that we catch sporadically this month are kingfish, blackfin tuna and mahi-mahi. You never know what you might catch this week, there's a lot going on out there. Great yellowtail snapper bite this week on our night anchor trips. This is our trip that departs at 7:30pm. It's been our best producing trip this month with a pretty steady yellowtail and mangrove snapper bite. Action has been pretty decent for most of our trips with the slow trip being the exception, not the norm like it was last month. Fishing usually improves this month as we get into the later spring season and into the summer season. We're starting to get into our best drift fishing season of the year. Technically it is May through August, but we start doing better and better as we get into late March. Mutton snappers are showing up for us and not all of them have been throw back. A few nice ones here and there are biting. Groupers are biting like mad of course. They know when they aren't in season. Lots of other small bottom fish like lane snappers, mangroves, grunts, porgies and triggers are biting too. The snapper fishing is beginning to improve immensely. It's much better than it was a week ago and more consistent too. Each day it's getting a little bit better. Deepwater snappers such as vermillions are biting on chicken rigs. And shallow water snappers such as yellowtails, mangroves and mutton snappers are biting better too. They are biting on chunks of squid and sardines in 40-90ft of water. Snapper fishing generally gets pretty good for us in March and it continues all the way through the summer months. We're getting a good amount of snappers on our drift fishing trips this week. Lots of yellowtails, mangroves, muttons and lane snappers are biting out there. Our best bite lately is north of the inlet in 40-60ft of water, just on the inside edge of the reef. We're getting the best action on the afternoon and night trips, but morning is holding it's own too. Most of our catches lately have been snappers, but we have been catching some other species too such as grouper, kingfish and mahi-mahi.
