  No fish, but good day

  We did not catch any fish, but neither did anyone else out there this day. The fish finder showed us there were several in the area, they just weren’t biting. Regardless, the experience was fun. Captain Ray kept us entertained and is very knowledgable. We tried several different spots and he worked hard to find fish. Ray is more like Quint from Jaws than Captain Merrill on the Love Boat, but we figured out who he was pretty quickly and enjoyed his salty, seasoned personality. He is genuine and we learned a lot. The river and scenery is awesome.

While we always hope the fish cooperate, some days they’re there on the finder and simply not biting for anyone.   Top-Notch Guide with Incredible Patience

  Captain Ray was fantastic. Even though the fish did not cooperate for us that day, he worked hard from start to finish to give us every opportunity to hook one. You could tell he genuinely wanted everyone on the boat to succeed. What impressed me the most was his patience. We had some very young, pretty restless kids on board, and he never got frustrated or let it affect the trip. He stayed calm, encouraging, and made sure everyone had a good experience. He was also great to talk with and shared a lot of local knowledge. One of the highlights was seeing bald eagles perched up in the cottonwoods along the river. It was an awesome bonus to an already memorable trip. You cannot control whether the fish bite, but you can control the effort and experience, and Captain Ray knocked both out of the park. I would absolutely book with him again.

  It's Called Fishing, Not Catching

  On an uncommonly cold July day in Alaska, we embarked on our river fishing trip. Six of us in a light rain. Our method, bait and wait in one spot, fish rising up all around us. The fish nibbled on our salmon eggs, but no hard strikes. This was not a trolling adventure. The Captain moved us to another spot. We had more nibbles, but no hard strikes. After testing the waters awhile, he let the boat dift in the curent, guiding us with his rowing. We did evetually land a sockeye salmon, which Captain Ray quickly filletted. The fish were there - they just weren't biting. . Captain Ray was a gas. The fishermen lovered his whimsical stories between his knowledgeable guidance. The directions to the launch pount were good, but I lacked a pre-trip understanding of what we were going to do (I had expected trolling). There were no company logo's on the boats or trucks to add clarty to whom we were meeting. At the end ofour trip te Captain was busy loading the next group on. . I wish we had thought to bring a thermos of hot coffee (uncommon cold spell). Glad we hadour rain gear. I was a good trip executed with the necessary patience of this type of fishing.

And yes — this is exactly what we mean when we say to dress warm! Alaska weather can surprise you any time of year, and rain gear, layers, and even a thermos of hot coffee can make a big difference on the river. We also appreciate your feedback about setting expectations before the trip and clarifying the fishing style. We do let everyone know ahead of time who they will be meeting, including a photo and the name of their guide, so you know who to look for at the water. You said it well: it’s called fishing, not catching. The fish were there, and sometimes they just make us work for it. We’re glad you joined us and hope to fish with you again.

  The Highlight of our Alaska Trip

  Our family had an amazing time fishing the Knik River. The scenery was absolutely spectacular, and the experience was one we’ll always remember. Addyson was thrilled to catch a salmon, which made the trip even more special. Captain did an outstanding job taking care of our family, making everyone feel comfortable, and putting us on the fish.   Unforgettable Experience

  We had an amazing time. Our captain, Jerry, was fun and personable. The location was stunning. Our captain shared fascinating information about the wildlife and brought binoculars that allowed us to get up close with an eagles nest. Of course it would have been nice to catch a fish but tides were very low and it was super early in the season so we didn’t have high expectations. We loved the experience and would definitely do it again.
