I believe that I informed you about the way we fish in Madeira before going out on the trip but I might have been unclear in some way and that I apologise for.

Marlin fishing in Madeira is conducted by trolling skirted lures on the surface. The reason we run the lures close to the boat is that the boat itself acts as a FAD (fish attracting device). The prop wash attracts marlin, it does not scare them off. A Blue marlin spend 90% of there time between 10 meters depth and the surface so we run surface lures.

The lures we were running this afternoon in the spread was exactly the same ones we were running that same morning catching and releasing a 500lb blue marlin (see pic and previous review from Samantha).
That is the reason for not doing any changes in the spread. It works if there is fish around.

Marlin fishing is very visual searching for activities on the surface, fins, diving birds etc and that is the reason we drive the boat from the fly bridge keeping lookout.
