This group would not be happy unless they sank the boat with groupers, Black Sea bass, and triggerfish.
We fished for Amberjacks and hooked up four at least. Sharks were to abundant and ate our keeper sized jacks. We caught throw back trigger fish left and right. When we did hook a scamp or a mingo snapper a shark ate it. We found a fish attracting device on our way out and caught a king mackerel off it. We caught another one bottom fishing. We did catch a lane snapper and a single mingo snapper. It made it to the surface and did not get eaten, or wound off, or shook off the hooks by over aggressive fishing.
Fishing was already reported difficult by other captains before we left the docks. The fishing and weather was quite poor that day. We just got off nept tides, leaving us with not much tidal swing. We have a full moon and dingy water from way to much rain for way to long a week ago. Topping it off were two nice young fellas who were our anglers. They were nice enough fellas ,they just could not get used to fishing how I was trying to get them to fish. They lost fish that were good ones to sharks, but easily lost many more to absolutely not implementing my instructions and implementing their own techniques. I have people get on the boat who have never been fishing much or at all and do extremely well because they only know what I have told them. Bottom fishing is so different from all other forms of fishing. And so is fishing in a professional bass tournament. Very different!
Last trip I ran for them they chose a day that was blowing off the beach way to hard to go off the beach to bottom fish. I told them pompano might be in the flat surf and redfish as well. We found the red fish after going much further a ride than almost any charter boat would run on a four hour trip, but it was the only place we were allowed to get in close to the beach legally to fish. And the only option for this groups ideas of catching good eating fish. The red fish would not **hidden content** cigar minnows or jigs. The pompano were in small packs and singles. They would bite but were very spooky and hard to get to bite. I re located fish over and over for one real quick cast on them before they were gone again is all I could provide. I hooked up two and they managed to hook and keep on the line a couple. Only three pompano were keepers.  We had caught a Spanish mackerel and a blue fish as well. Other boats that day either fished the bay and caught nothing or went out into the gulf and got rocked heavily and splashed with salt water. They only caught throw back sized Amberjacks. Most got sick and did not make it to the Amberjacks that tried.
Most people do not get on board and start talking how they want to catch specific fish. Most are happy catching what is fun and available and if good eating, so be it.
The first trip I received 0 tip from these folks, Other than that, I had no idea I had run a bad trip. We had done better with action and outcome than the four boat captains I spoke to latter that day. One ran a six hour trip trolling the hole time. They caught 6 Spanish mackerels. Another boat caught 20 head of throw back jacks. He had one guy who was obviously fairly tough fella. They both wished they had stayed inshore after hearing what we had caught and had been doing. They came in to ride the calm of the beach back to the pass when they had seen us. The Captain spoke to me the next day telling me how beat up and sore he was from that trip. He told me he was envious of what we had done.
I don’t know… guess I will get a group like this from time to time, but hope to not get them twice in two weeks. This is your proof. They booked me a second time and did not know it. Then when they found out they had booked me a second time, they still kept their booking with me. They had told me by text message that the last two trips they had been on they did not catch anything! One trip was one with me! We did catch fish!
What in the world is some peoples deal!
One more thing…. one in the group kept getting their phone out when ever we stoped on a bottom spot. I did not want to go fish a couple little hide holes near by due to the playing with the phone deal. I do not know if they were marking my locations, but it sure seemed that way to me.
