I've been fishing since I was 3 years old, and sailing since I was 18 – now I'm over 50 years of age, and I have fished and sailed in waters all over the world! I practice almost all types of fishing. I manage and direct my own fishing, nautical and tourism services, and graduated in Social Communication and Counseling. During part of my working life I worked in corporate companies, managing the commercialization of services with global clients, which has led to me becoming fluent in 3 languages. When I go on vacation, I choose destinations where I can combine my free time and plenty of rest and relaxation with...fishing!

My son and I had the best day fishing with Captain Mauricio Oñate. What an awesome day!!! We caught several fish, enjoyed food and drink and absolutely marveled at the river system. Captain Oñate is an expert guide with decades of experience. His communications with us leading up to the day, was excellent! The transportation to and from our hotel was seamless. This was among the best highlights of our visit to Argentina!!!! Thank you Captain Oñate!!!!

    Fantastic!!!

    Adaptive Day Trip (AM)2 adults

Easily the best trip for the time, effort, accommodations and results!! We all know that the art and skill involved in fishing is unique and not to be taken lightly. Captain Mauricio is not only a gentleman but a great guide who has a sincere passion for fishing and for customer service. I can’t recommend him enough!! We had a blast! And we caught fish!! Golden Dorado and crazy looking catfish! It’s called “fishing” not “catching” for a reason but Cpt. Mauricio got us out there and my son and I made memories for a lifetime! Bucket List for sure!

    Wonderful fishing trip

    Adaptive Day Trip (AM)4 adults

We had a wonderful time with our party of 4 on this fishing trip! The adaptive start time was super helpful for our incoming from the airport. Mauricio was so kind, kept a wonderfully clean boat & ensured we all had the best time. A great light lunch was provided, and we all caught fish! I would defintiely recommend this trip to anyone visiting the area!

Rio de la Plata - The Second Trip

    Half Day Trip (AM)2 adults

Due to the water conditions, for this trip we decided to chase Tararira - the wolf fish - a fish that I never caught before. We navigated through the channels of the delta, and we stopped in the first spot we fished in the previous trip. No fish bit in that spot, so soon Captain Mauricio made the decision to move further upstream. We arrived in an area where some bays with shallow water and lots of vegetation opened up on the edge of the main river. We fished there with top-water lures, with which we caught Tararira - over 10 fish. We also cast two live-bait lines in the main river, where we caught dorado. Among other things, we saw a carp lying in the sun, a rather big fish but which was not the objective of our expedition. Fishing for tararira is spectacular, and requires a certain degree of skill. But don't worry - Captain Mauricio will teach you what to do. After that, we moved again in "the middle of the river", to chase big fish. We used live bait and had many attacks, but only brought one large dorado to the boat. Indeed, the weather conditions were quite difficult, with wind and waves, and the fish's bites were not as determined and aggressive as the previous day. Overall, the second trip was a successful trip, too. Captain Mauricio is a kind person and a pleasant company, and once again, a very good guide. I highly recommend Captain Mauricio for both beginners and experienced anglers, and as I saw, he is the best guide in the area. Unlike other charters, he is not looking just for take your money, he cares for your demands and needs, and do his best to ofer you a great experience. I left Argentina with good memories thanks to Mauricio, and if I will ever come back in Buenos Aires, for sure I will contact him.

Hi Sergiu, great to hear from you! Thank you so much for your reviews. It was a pleasure having you on board and sharing your dedication and passion for fishing. It's very motivating to put an angler on the spot, putting his all into landing them. I'm also very happy that you were able to have such good fights with big dorados and, above all, that you were able to catch one of them using spinning, right in the middle of the river. In the middle of the widest river in the world, and where this type of fishing technique isn't usually used. Congratulations!!! And until our next fishing trip together. Captain Mauricio

    Big golden dorado

    Full Day Trip2 adults

First of all, I would like to say that Captain Mauricio is an experienced fisherman and he knows the waters very well. From the beginning, I discussed with him in order to prepare our trips, and he promptly replied to me. I use to bring my own fishing gear for this kind of trips, and Captain Mauricio provided me all the details regarding what is needed. I told him that I do not want "a trip just to have fun" - I am an experienced fisherman and I have certain targets. Captain Mauricio was very careful of my demands. Unlike other charters that organize trips for tourists, and only care about catching a fish or two for fun, Captain Mauricio is the perfect guide for both beginners and advanced anglers, and can lead you on specialized fishing trips depending on the target species. Moreover, like a true fisherman, Captain Mauricio is very careful in respecting nature and the fish. Due to the weather conditions, I agreed with Mauricio to change the initial scheduled dates, but I want to highlight that he was very careful to the forecast, wind, currents, water level, etc. Moreover, this charters offers transfer to the meeting place (the port where the boat is). Mauricio's associate, Javier, is a kind person and a good driver - he took care for the transfer from the hotel and back. I also want to mention that both, Mauricio and Javier speaks in English - which as I sadly found, is not so common among argentinian people, even for those which works with tourits. So, an additional plus for that! Regarding the trip, I booked two trips. My main target was the golden dorado, followed by other species, so on the first day we chased the dorados. The first spot we stopped was a confluence of a chanel with a river branch. I caught my very first dorado at my third cast. Basically, in the first 15 minutes of fishing I already caught 3 dorados. We used both live bait, and lures. I caught about 10 dorados in that place, and one piranha (Palometa). Captain Mauricio also caught some small yellow catfish, which served as bait. After that, we moved in "the middle of the river" (a place that in my opinion is a beginning of an estuary, but the locals still call it river), to chase big fish. In there we caught 5 big dorados, one of them with lure. Acoording to Captain Mauricio, this was the very first time when he saw someone catching a dorado with vobler in that area - "the middle of the river". Overall, the first day was a successful trip.

The golden dorado are still eating!!

Apr 9, 2026 • Tigre
We had just come from a week of storms, cloudy skies, and a sharp drop in temperature. In fact, at the time of our fishing trip, we had south-southwest winds with strong gusts. We started fishing with mid-water and floating lines in areas with an average depth of 10 feet. The water temperature was 20 degrees Celsius. During the morning, we drifted at the mouths of large rivers. We had a few bites that we couldn't land. Around midday, we fished in smaller streams that were flowing out, and finally, in the afternoon, we moved again to an area of large sandbars surrounding a deep channel that runs north/south. We baited with small fish and eels. In this area, the bites started, and now we could finally land the golden dorado in our boat. We finished a day of fishing with sun, fish, and lots of joy! Although the water temperature is lower than it was a few weeks ago, it's just a matter of finding the areas where the golden dorado continue to feed year-round. Thanks, and until the next fishing trip! Captain Mauricio

Bad weather, good fishing

Mar 29, 2026 • Tigre
Today we started the day with very cloudy skies, some rain, and a southeasterly wind with gusts of up to 30 knots. Because of this, we had to fish in the channels and along the coast with plenty of trees, to be sheltered from the wind. We drift-fished from the bank where the wind was coming from. We crossed the channel and, upon reaching the opposite bank, repeated the process. We fished with floating and mid-water lines. We used size 10 hooks and eels and small live fish called shad as bait. Several catfish took the eel bait very well. Using small fish as bait, we managed to land two golden dorado and a tararira (similar to a wolffish). Once the fishing day was over, with clouds on the horizon and the rain replaced by sunshine, we began our return to port, happy to have enjoyed a beautiful day of fishing. Until next time! The golden dorado keep eating

Mar 27, 2026 • Tigre
We started the day with a gentle north-northeast wind. The tide was rising throughout the entire trip. Today we chose to fish an area of sandbanks bordering a deep channel. We used both floating and mid-water lines. Almost all the bites came on the floating lines baited with live shad. After several missed strikes, we managed to land two nice golden dorado. On the mid-water line, we only had one very violent strike that ended up breaking the line. This line was baited with a medium-sized yellow catfish. We also used eels as bait. On this line, only small fish bit, which couldn't reach the tandem hooks. If you would like to know more about fishing on the Río de la Plata—the widest river in the world—please feel free to contact me. I will reply as soon as possible. Thank you! Captain Mauricio

Season of big fish!!!

Mar 12, 2026 • Tigre
Today we started the day with a gentle east-northeast wind. We sailed along the Río de la Plata (the widest river in the world) to a deep channel running north-south. We began drifting over the sandbar to the east. For bait, we used live eels and some fish called sábalos. The first two fish were large catfish (between 12 and 16 kilos). With powerful runs and tail thrashes, they put up a great fight! As the wind shifted to east-southeast and increased in intensity, we also landed two golden dorado (the largest reached almost 10 kilos) and several smaller catfish. With the wind now gushing to 24 knots and the waves getting bigger, we sailed to a sheltered stream. There we had lunch and even had several bites from fish with strong teeth that devoured all our bait. We finally managed to hook a very nice tararira (it's similar to a wolf fish). If you're interested in learning more about fishing for species in the Río de la Plata, please feel free to write to me and I'll be happy to answer. Keep your lines taut! Captain Mauricio

Merry golden Christmas

Dec 24, 2025 • Tigre
Today we went for a short trip. There was a light north/northwest wind. The tide was coming in and there was plenty of sunshine. The water temperature is 27 degrees Celsius. All the bites were on rigs with one or two hooks, fishing in mid-water. We used small live baitfish. The best fishing was in an area of sandbars, with depths of no more than 3 feet. As always, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to write to me so I can respond as soon as possible. Thank you very much, tight lines, and best wishes! Captain Mauricio

Buenos Aires continues to offer many Gol

Nov 11, 2025 • Tigre
Today we went on a 6-hour excursion. We left the port around noon. The tide was in its last two hours of incoming flow. We had a light east-northeast wind. We sailed for approximately 45 minutes to a very good fishing spot at this time of year. It's a series of sandbars and channels with a strong current. Many small fish move there, which are the main food source for golden dorado. We began our first drift over a very hard sandbar, in no more than 3 feet of water. There we had the first bites and managed to land our first golden dorado. As we ran out of water for our drift, we moved to different spots. In all of them, we had very good bites from dorado ranging from 3 to 7 kilos. We used size 10 hooks, tied to 80-pound steel leaders. Today, none of our lines had weights, so all the baits worked in mid-water. In the mid-afternoon, we had a delicious snack. There were different kinds of cold cuts, cheeses, and olives. Around 5 PM, with the wind shifting to the southeast, we began our return to port. The fishing trip yielded: 7 dorado caught on the boat, others that managed to escape, and a new experience fishing on the widest river in the world: the Río de la Plata. Captain Mauricio
